Apprentice Spotlight: Amy

Explore Amy’s journey as a Maintenance and Operations Engineering Technician Apprentice at EDF’s Heysham 2 power station.

What inspired you to apply for this apprenticeship with EDF?

I applied as I wanted to gain practical experience within the nuclear industry. It’s a very exciting sector with a variety of opportunities, especially as we work towards net zero 2030.

Why did you choose an apprenticeship over university or other career paths?

I knew I didn’t want to go to university, and this apprenticeship gives me university experience without debt. I also wanted more practical experience compared to classroom learning.

What qualifications have you gained so far, and what’s next?

I’ve gained a Level 3 in Engineering at Bridgwater and Taunton College, and I’m currently working towards my HNC at Lancaster and Morecambe College.

What does a typical day look like for you?

Every day is different, which I really enjoy. We work on various parts of the plant and on a wide range of equipment. The day starts with a safety briefing, then we head out onto the plant and complete the job with a Technician.

What kind of support have you received during your apprenticeship?

There’s so much support available. We have an Apprentice Coordinator, Technicians, Team Leaders, and Assistant Team Leaders who are always there to help. We’re also assigned a mentor and have reviews with Bridgwater and Taunton College every eight weeks in years 3 and 4.

At EDF, we believe Success is Personal. What does success mean to you?

Success means being the best I can be in everything I want to achieve. EDF supports this by providing continuous learning opportunities and allowing me to apply my knowledge practically.

What’s next for you at EDF?

I’m currently completing my HNC and want to finish my apprenticeship. From there, I hope to become a qualified Control & Instrumentation Technician and eventually earn a degree.

Have you taken part in any of EDF’s volunteering opportunities?

Yes! I’ve attended a St. John’s Hospice quiz night, a charity football match supporting Alzheimer’s Society, and helped with a beach clean on the local beach.

What’s your favourite thing about working at EDF?

My favourite thing is the opportunities EDF has given me. The company allowed me to move to Somerset for two years and gain real practical experience at a working nuclear power station. Not to mention, I’ve made friends for life.

What’s your advice for candidates participating in an apprenticeship assessment centre?

Be yourself and practice with the materials the company provides. Even if you don’t know something, just keep calm and stay positive – they want to see the real you!
