Apprentice Spotlight: Joe
What motivated you to apply for this apprenticeship programme?
I wanted to learn practical and theoretical skills all at the same time whilst also developing my personal skills.
Why did you choose an apprenticeship over other options?
I knew by doing an apprenticeship I would be able to get hands-on experience right from the beginning, learning and developing all the skills I need to help me on the career path I’ve chosen.
How does the reality of your role compare to your expectations?
I’m over the moon with choosing to go down the apprenticeship route - it’s exceeded my expectations. I enjoy learning in a real-world setting.
What qualifications will you gain during your apprenticeship?
I'll get a Level 3 in Engineering and an HNC in General Engineering, helping me develop into a well-rounded professional in the nuclear industry.
What appealed to you about the energy industry?
With the need to reduce carbon emissions and the world now using more and more electricity I wanted to be part of the industry that helped deliver these key things the world needs.
What are your do day-to-day responsibilities as an apprentice?
I help keep various parts of plant running that make up a nuclear power plant, carrying out preventive maintenance and breakdown maintenance, keeping the plant working how it was designed and operating safely so it’s able to function as and when it's needed.
I enjoy learning how things work and have a keen interest in engineering so there is no better place to work than at a power station.
What support have you received in your role?
The Maintenance team I’m part of has been fantastic at teaching me everything I need to learn, taking time to explain things to me. I also have the support of an Apprenticeship Coordinator who I’m in regular contact with.
At EDF, we believe Success is Personal. What does success mean to you?
Once I finish my apprenticeship, I hope to become a valued member of my maintenance team and become a nuclear professional.
Personally, I want to have built good relationships with my peers and work colleagues and developed my life skills as I become a young man taking the big steps into adult life like buying my own home.
What’s next for your career at EDF?
I plan to become a well-rounded Maintenance Technician and take advantage of any other training opportunities I get offered. In another couple of years, when I have more experience, I’ll see what other career opportunities are available with EDF.
Which part of the rewards and benefits package do you get the most value from?
Gym membership at a reduced rate. I think it’s important to keep fit and healthy as it helps with your mental health as well as helping in my job role.
What’s your favourite thing about working at EDF?
I enjoy coming to work with all the different people and departments that make up the power station and help produce electricity for the country.
What’s your top tip for someone applying or going through a selection process for an apprenticeship?
Do your research - understand what it is you're applying for and what’s expected of you. At the assessment centre make sure you get involved and remember there's no such thing as a silly question!
