Apprentice Spotlight: Suria

Meet Suria, a Maintenance and Operations Engineering Technician Apprentice who’s building her career through hands-on learning and the guidance of skilled technicians at EDF’s Heysham 2 power station.

What inspired you to apply for this apprenticeship programme?

I knew I wanted the opportunity to gain practical experience straight from school and also develop transferable skills like initiative and teamwork.

Why did you choose an apprenticeship over university or other career paths?

From school, I knew I wanted to take more of a practical approach towards learning, so do both classroom and on-site learning.

What qualifications will you gain during your apprenticeship?

I've got my Level 3 in Engineering at Bridgwater and Taunton College (National College for Nuclear), and I'm currently working towards my HNC.

What appealed to you about the energy industry?

The industry offers a wide range of roles, from technical and engineering positions to strategic and planning roles, as well as opportunities in renewable energy and infrastructure development.

What do you do day-to-day during your apprenticeship?

Every day is different, working in all different areas of the plant. The technicians get us involved in jobs whenever possible, so we can gain hands-on experience. We also get to see all different teams and departments whilst being an apprentice, which gives us a great insight into variety of roles on site.

What support have you received in your role?

I've been assigned a mentor in my team. She's there to help me with my qualification manual and any of my general concerns and worries.

At EDF we believe Success is Personal. What does success mean to you?

Success for me, both professionally and personally, is always aiming to achieve my goals, which is looking at how to further my education and keep learning as much as I can within the Control & Instrumentation trade.

How do you see your career evolving at EDF?

I have recently been looking into progressing my education further by exploring potential degree options. For now, I want to keep familiarising myself with my trade and routine jobs that I can become confident in.

What’s your favourite thing about working at EDF?

I love the life experience it has already given me, when moving away to Somerset for two years for college. I also love the support I've been given from everyone that works here, the technicians are always willing to spend their time teaching us on every job.

What’s your top tip for someone applying for an apprenticeship?

My top tip would be to thoroughly research the company and the specific apprenticeship role they offer, so you can be confident it’s something you’ll genuinely enjoy. It’s also important to make sure the company’s ethics and overall mission align with your own values.

What's your advice for the assessment centre?

Go in with a positive mindset and try your best! The company will give you an insight to what's involved, so try and practice these skills, so you feel more confident when the time comes.
