Parents and carers guide to apprenticeships

Make the next step count

As a parent or guardian, you want your child to build a secure, successful future. Choosing what to do after school or college is a big decision, and an apprentice programme can offer a supported route into a long-term, rewarding career.

With an EDF Apprenticeship, your child will earn while they learn, gain hands‑on experience, and develop industry‑leading skills in a growing energy sector. And they won’t be doing it alone — we offer dedicated support every step of the way, from training and mentoring to wellbeing and on‑the‑job guidance.

Why choose an apprenticeship?

Discover how an EDF apprenticeship empowers young talent to grow, achieve, and imagine what’s possible for their future careers.

Tips for applying from existing apprentices

To help candidates feel prepared and at ease, our current apprentices have shared their best advice for the application and assessment process.

How an EDF apprenticeship is designed for success

Structure

Most of your child’s time is spent working on impactful projects, solving practical problems, using industry‑standard tools, and contributing to important work across EDF.

They also have protected time to focus on their training with a college, university or specialist provider, ensuring they progress towards a recognised qualification.

Entry requirements

Our apprenticeships are designed for long‑term growth. Your child can join at the level that matches their current skills and qualifications, and progress step-by-step as their confidence and expertise develop.

We offer a variety of entry points and qualification requirements are advertised on each role.

Locations and travel

Opportunities are available across the UK. Some apprentices relocate as part of their programme and we'll ensure they receive the guidance and support to settle into new environments.

Each apprentice has dedicated, wrap-around support from day one, throughout their training, and as they move into their first role after training.

Support

Apprentices spend the first two weeks of their training at our Outward Bound experience, where they build confidence and make friends.

Throughout their training apprentices have access to career managers, mentors, placement managers, buddies, and a robust occupational health and wellbeing team.

You’ll receive an email acknowledging your application and one of our dedicated team will review your application personally.

We’re proud to be a Disability Confident employer. If you encounter any accessibility challenges during your online application, please let us know by contacting: yourfuture@edfenergy.com and one of the recruitment team will be in touch.

Are there any issues applying for roles using an iCloud email address?

We’ve identified some infrequent issues when applicants apply via an iCloud email address. To ensure you receive all communications, we recommend using an alternative email provider to apply for roles where possible.

What’s EDF’s position on using AI in recruitment?

The rise in AI can support multiple elements of the recruitment process. Read our guidance to help you understand our position of AI use in the recruitment process.

I wanted to apply for a position I saw, but it's not listed anymore - can I still apply?

All of our Early Careers roles have a closing date listed. Occasionally, we may close roles early if we reach our application numbers. Please note, we’re not able to accept late applications. You can register your interest on our careers site, so that you get notified of any future roles which may suit your requirements.

How can I check the status of my application?

We always respond to applications as soon as possible, and we will aim to update you on progress within 7 working days, however, you can also monitor progress on your application through your EDF profile on the careers site..

Who can I contact for feedback on my application?

Due to the high number of applications that we receive, we’re unable to provide detailed feedback to candidates who are not successful at application or online testing stage. After online testing, you'll receive a personalised feedback report, which will guide you on your areas of strength and areas of development for the future.

Do you accept speculative applications?

Instead of accepting speculative CVs, we advise you to register your details on our careers website and set up alerts for future opportunities which will be relevant to you.

What do you do with my personal details?

At EDF, we respect your privacy and value the trust you put in us when you share your personal details with us. Find more information on what data we collect and why we collect this data from you: EDF privacy and cookie policy.

Please refer to our Early Careers FAQs or use our chatbot PIP for assistance in the first instance. Early Careers Recruitment Team are only able to answer questions related to Graduate, 12-month Placement and Apprentice queries. If you can’t find the answer you’re looking for on our website, please contact us at: YourFuture@edfenergy.com. I’m a Recruitment Consultant, how can I work with EDF?

We don’t use Recruitment Agencies for Early Careers recruitment. For Experienced Hire recruitment, we operate a preferred supplier list for recruitment agencies and are unable to accept unsolicited or speculative applications from suppliers not on the list. Please contact us to find out more here: AgencyQueries@edfenergy.com.

Who should I contact about EDF attending a careers fair at a school?

You can get in touch with our Outreach Programme team at EDFoutreach@edf-energy.com to discuss further.

As part of our recruitment process, it is essential that you have the right to work in the UK. During your onboarding, we will ask you to complete a right to work check, which may be conducted either virtually or in person, depending on your documentation. We will inform you of the specific process when we begin onboarding.

For all our Early Careers programmes, if you meet our role requirements at application review, we’ll take you through to the next part of the process. The next stage is a test that will focus on your natural skills and behaviours. This will come from a company called Arctic Shores. Keep an eye on your inbox and remember to check your spam/junk folder too as they may pop in there!

If you pass our testing, you’ll move on to our video interview. This is a one-way video interview, where we will ask you a series of scenario-based questions for you to respond to.

Almost there! Following the video interview, we will get in contact with you (usually within 3 weeks) to let you know if you have been successful at moving onto the next stage or not. The next stage will be an assessment centre or face-to-face interview, depending on the programme you have applied for. You can find out more about each stage of our assessment process on the EDF Careers site.

Our commitment to inclusive hiring.

We’re proud of our inclusive culture, and to reflect the community we serve, it’s important we continue to embrace initiatives that harness a rich mixture of backgrounds where success is defined individually. That’s why we use anonymous recruitment for many of our roles. By removing personally identifiable information, our process focuses on skills, experience and potential – core competencies required for successful performance. Our goal is to create a fair and inclusive hiring experience where barriers are removed and everyone’s welcome.

How does the interview process work?

Interviews are designed to measure the skills and behaviours required to be successful in each of the programmes we offer. All candidates are assessed against the same set of skills and behaviours to ensure fairness and these are specific to the role that’s been applied to.

Our face-to-face interviews are carried out by Hiring Managers, Recruiters, and HR colleagues from across the business and these can be done virtually or in person.

These are done as a standalone interview for our Industrial Placement programmes, but for Graduate and Apprentice programmes, they form part of the assessment centre day.

What happens at an assessment centre?

If you’re invited to an assessment centre, the recruitment team will let you know what to expect. Our assessment days will involve several different exercises, giving you the opportunity to demonstrate all the different skills and behaviours that are important to the programme you have applied for.

Our assessment centres are usually done virtually, but you will be advised of this when you receive your invitation. We will also send you more information about what to expect on the day when we invite you to the assessment centre.

What to wear for my interview?

At EDF, most people wear smart casual attire. However, interviewees usually dress in business-wear. A good example of this is a clean and ironed shirt with smart trousers/skirt or suit and smart shoes. This is just as important for a video interview as it is when meeting us face-to-face.

What is the dress code?

For site and remote technical roles you'll be provided with a uniform and necessary PPE. Otherwise, our employees are expected to dress appropriately for the environment in which they work.

When will I hear the outcome?

We know you'll be keen to hear the outcome of your interview or assessment centre, so we will always aim to update you within 7 days of an assessment centre or within 7 days of our final interview taking place.

How do I tell you about any adjustments required in respect of a disability?

We’re proud to be a Disability Confident employer. If you encounter any accessibility challenges during your online application, or you require any adjustments or support during the selection process, please let us know by contacting: yourfuture@edfenergy.com.

We operate a guaranteed interview scheme for candidates with disabilities, which means that if you meet the minimum criteria for the opportunity and you share your disability with us, you will automatically progress to the video interview stage of our selection process.

I have just finished School / College and don't have any work experience - can I still apply to EDF?

Yes, we don’t require you to have any previous work experience for our Early Careers programmes. You can find out more about all of the programmes we offer on our early careers page.

We're aware that a number of employment scams have targeted EDF recently and we take this very seriously. If you receive something that looks suspicious please don’t respond or click on any links or attachments. You can report any suspicious communications to us by emailing fraud@edfenergy.com.

To help you remain vigilant, please note the following:

Our Recruitment Team will only use an official EDF email address to contact you.

EDF will never request financial information or payments during the recruitment process.

You can apply for all EDF job opportunities on our company website.

You should never disclose any personal information (national insurance number, date of birth, bank account details, address) or make payments to an unknown party.
