Apprentice Spotlight: Ella-Louise

Discover Ella-Louise’s apprenticeship journey as an  Engineering Maintenance Technician at EDF’s Heysham 1 power station. From an open evening to hands-on experience, her story reflects the blend of training, guidance and real-world experience that helps apprentices thrive.

What inspired you to apply for this apprenticeship with EDF?

I spoke to my parents about my next career move, and my mum suggested I attend an EDF apprenticeship open evening. That’s where I learned more about the opportunities available and how to apply.

Why did you choose an apprenticeship over university or other career paths?

I felt an apprenticeship offered the best of both worlds - hands-on experience and theoretical learning. Plus, being paid to learn the skills I need for the job was a huge bonus.

What qualifications have you gained so far, and what’s next?

I’ve completed a Level 2 in Performing Engineering Operations and a Level 3 Maintenance and Operations Engineering Technician qualification at Bridgwater and Taunton College. Next, I’ll be working towards my HNC at Lancaster and Morecambe College.

What drew you to the energy industry?

It’s a dynamic and growing sector with lots of opportunities to learn and progress. I wanted to be part of something that’s constantly evolving.

“Success is personal, and for me, it’s about growing every day - technically and personally. EDF gives me the space and support to do just that.”

What does a typical day look like for you?

We start with a morning brief and job plan, then head to the Work Execution Centre to carry out tasks safely. After the job, we debrief and complete all necessary documentation.

What kind of support have you received during your apprenticeship?

There’s a strong support system in place. My Apprentice Coordinator is always available for questions or concerns, and I have regular reviews both at college and on-site to check on my wellbeing and progress.

At EDF, we believe Success is Personal. What does success mean to you?

For me, success means leaving work safely, completing tasks to a high standard, and continuously learning. It’s also about building strong relationships and becoming a better version of myself every day.

What’s next for you at EDF?

I’m focused on developing my skills and absorbing as much knowledge as I can. My goal is to transition into a full Technician role and keep challenging myself to grow.

What’s your favourite thing about working at EDF?

The safe working environment and the welcoming culture. I feel comfortable asking questions and know I’m part of a well-established company that supports my growth. The career possibilities are endless if I’m willing to push myself.

What helped you most when researching apprenticeships?

Hearing from family and peers gave me a real insight into life at EDF. I came in confident but curious, and I’ve kept an open mind ever since.

What’s your top tip for someone applying for an apprenticeship?

Prepare well, believe in yourself, and don’t be afraid to ask for help.

Any advice for the assessment centre?

Get involved in every task and make your voice count - just be mindful of giving others room to participate too.
