What really happens at an Apprenticeship Assessment Centre and why it’s normal to feel nervous
If you've been invited to an Apprenticeship Assessment Centre, the chances are your first reaction was a mix of excitement and nerves. That's completely normal. But what if I told you that the day is far more supportive — and a lot less intimidating — than you might think?
As a Business Admin Apprentice, I’ve been through EDF’s selection process as a candidate, and I wanted to get a better understanding of what assessment centres look like from the inside of an organisation. I’m currently undertaking a placement with the Recruitment team so I reached out to the Early Careers Recruiters to ask whether I could support an upcoming assessment day, and they were happy to have me involved.
Before the day even begins
What surprised me most was how much preparation goes on behind the scenes before candidates even arrive. I attended a pre-job brief meeting with the team, where everything about the day was mapped out - the schedule, the format, the roles each person would play, and how to ensure every candidate had the best possible experience.
There’s a whole team of people working hard to make the day run smoothly, and their focus is entirely on giving you an inclusive and welcoming environment.
On the day itself
My role on the day was to act as a runner (welcoming candidates at reception, guiding them to interview rooms, and being on hand to answer any questions about the schedule). I also got to share a little of my own experience as an EDF Apprentice, which candidates always seem to appreciate.
Seeing the day from this perspective genuinely changed how I think about assessment centres. The assessors and organisers aren’t there to catch you out. Everyone involved wants you to do well and show your best self.
What this means for you
If you’re preparing for an apprentice assessment centre, here are a few things worth remembering:
- You’re more prepared than you think. The skills and experiences that got you to this stage are exactly what the team wants to see. For example, if you've worked a part time job or volunteered in your community, you've already been building communication, teamwork, and reliability - the very qualities the team is looking for.
- The people running the day are on your side. From the moment you arrive, there are people whose job it is to make you feel comfortable and supported.
- It is okay to ask questions. On the day I attended, candidates who asked questions and engaged with the team came across as confident and curious - both great qualities in an apprentice.
- Everyone in the room was once where you are. The apprentices and team members you meet have all been through a selection process themselves at some point.
"My biggest piece of advice is to be your authentic self. Don’t try to answer questions the way you think assessors want you to; instead, answer in a way that genuinely reflects your thinking, experiences and potential. Assessment centres aren’t just about us evaluating you - they’re an opportunity for you to assess us too, to understand if the organisation’s culture, values, and people are the right fit for you."
Hollie, Recruitment Business Partner for EDF Early Careers.
My main takeaway from the day was that Assessment Centres aren’t something to fear - they’re an opportunity to show who you are and what you can bring to the team. I hope knowing a little more about what goes on behind the scenes helps you walk through those doors feeling ready.
Good luck - you've got this. 😊
