A Career at WMS: Cameron’s Story
What initially attracted you to join EDF and pursue a career in the energy sector?
My uncle worked at EDF years ago and always spoke highly of his experience. I also studied Earth and Climate Science at uni, so I was keen to work somewhere making a real impact on the energy transition. I was drawn to the wide range of opportunities at EDF, and the company’s unique role as both a supplier and a generator of renewable and zero-carbon energy really appealed to me.
What was it about WMS that appealed to you?
After my first few months at EDF, I knew I wanted to focus my career within WMS, particularly in the field of energy flexibility. The concept of a smart grid and the dynamic interplay between different technologies and markets that make it possible truly fascinates me.
How would you describe the working culture at WMS?
It’s demanding but flexible. You’re expected to perform at a high level, but there’s genuine support to make sure work fits around your personal life. I’m empowered to get on with my work without micro-management, and I’m trusted to manage my own time - whether that means working an hour later or taking a longer lunch for personal appointments.
What makes WMS stand out?
The people! I’m surrounded by a wide variety of intelligent and driven colleagues. The range of expertise and knowledge among relatively few people is endlessly impressive, and it’s impossible to be complacent when everyone around you is putting in their utmost effort.
How has WMS supported your growth and development?
I’ve grown tremendously, both in my day-to-day role and through a part-time data analysis apprenticeship that’s fully funded by WMS. Every few months, I can look back and see real progress in my skills and knowledge.
What does success mean to you?
To me, success is about genuine satisfaction – knowing I’ve delivered my best work to the highest standard. It’s also about continuous growth: each year, I strive to become a better person and expand my knowledge beyond where I was before.
What are your ambitions for the future?
I want to become a subject matter expert and be fully capable in data analysis using my own suite of skills. I’m trusted to develop these skills on the job and through personal development courses.
What would you say to someone considering applying to WMS?
If you’re looking for a place where your growth is supported, your ideas are valued, and your success is truly personal, WMS is the place for you. The opportunities are vast, the people are inspiring, and you’ll be trusted to shape your own journey.
