Meet the Programme Leads: What it's really like to complete an Industrial Placement at EDF

Thinking about taking a year-long industrial placement? We spoke to Becky and Polly, two of our Early Careers Programme Leads, who share what makes an Industrial Placement at EDF unique, the support students receive throughout the year, and how the experience can help shape your future career.

What does your role involve?

As Early Careers Programme Lead, we oversee EDF's Industrial Placement programme and support students across a wide range of business areas throughout their placement year.

Our role starts long before students join us. We help prepare both students and managers ahead of their start date, deliver onboarding and induction activities, and provide ongoing support throughout the year through regular check-ins, progress reviews and development conversations.

A key part of the role is being a trusted point of contact for our placement students. Whether they need guidance, support or advice, we want them to know there's always someone they can turn to.

The best part of the role is seeing how much students grow during their year with us. Watching them develop new skills, build confidence and achieve things they didn't think possible is incredibly rewarding.

What makes an Industrial Placement at EDF valuable?

What sets an industrial placement at EDF apart is the opportunity for students to spend 12 months embedded within a team, taking on real responsibilities and making meaningful contributions.

Rather than simply observing, they're actively involved in projects that have a genuine impact on the business. It gives students the opportunity to experience what a career in their chosen field is really like and discover what interests them most.

EDF is also a hugely diverse organisation. Depending on where you're based, you could gain experience at one of our nuclear power stations, support one of Europe's largest construction projects at Hinkley Point C, work in customer-facing teams, or contribute to major business and commercial functions.

Few organisations can offer such a broad range of opportunities.

What kinds of placements are available?

Opportunities vary from year to year, but we've previously offered placements in areas including:

  • Engineering
  • Supply Chain
  • Chemistry
  • Instrumentation & Control

  • Environment
  • Research & Development
  • Project Construction
  • Finance
  • Legal
  • Plant and Business Improvement
  • Marketing
  • Commercial
  • Creative Content

This variety allows students to explore different career paths and gain valuable industry experience while still studying for their degree.

How much responsibility do placement students have?

After an initial period of onboarding and development, students are trusted with real responsibility and encouraged to contribute to the success of their teams.

Previous placement students have:

·       Presented their work to senior leaders at our power stations

·       Led projects to improve employee processes across the business

·       Travelled internationally to visit suppliers supporting major EDF projects

·       Delivered work that has had a visible impact on business outcomes

We want students to leave with more than just experience on their CV. We want them to leave knowing they've made a genuine contribution and developed the confidence that comes from doing meaningful work.

What support is available throughout the year?

Support is a huge part of the experience.

Students have access to their Career Manager, the wider team around them, the Early Careers team and HR colleagues throughout their placement. We make sure there's always someone available to offer advice, answer questions or provide guidance.

Students also become part of a wider network of placement students across EDF. Having a cohort going through a similar experience can be incredibly valuable, whether it's sharing advice, learning from each other or building lasting friendships.

Alongside this, students can access EDF's wider wellbeing support, including our Employee Assistance Programme, Occupational Health services and Mental Health First Aiders.

How do you help students settle into professional life?

We begin supporting students long before their first day.

Once someone accepts an offer, they're invited into our pre-joining programme, where they can attend welcome webinars, meet colleagues and learn more about what to expect when they start.

These sessions help bridge the gap between university and the workplace by providing practical advice, introducing students to the business and allowing them to hear directly from current placement students.

By the time they arrive, they already have familiar faces, useful information and a support network in place, helping them feel more confident from day one.

What skills do students develop during their placement?

During their placement year, students can develop both technical and professional skills that will support them throughout their future careers. The technical skills gained will vary depending on the role and business area, but students often build expertise in industry tools, data analysis, project management, and software such as Excel and Power BI.

Equally important are the professional skills developed throughout the year. Students regularly strengthen their:

·       Communication skills

·       Teamwork and collaboration

·       Problem-solving abilities

·       Time management

·       Professional confidence

·       Stakeholder management

·       Self-awareness and resilience

One of the biggest changes we see is a growth in self-confidence. Students finish the year with a stronger understanding of their strengths, their capabilities and where they want their careers to take them.

What opportunities are there outside of the day job?

There are opportunities everywhere for students who are willing to get involved.

Students can access an extensive range of learning and development resources, attend networking events, join employee networks, volunteer, participate in knowledge-sharing sessions and contribute to projects beyond their immediate role.

There's always something happening across the business and students are encouraged to make the most of it.

Tell us about the IP Society

The IP Society is a student-led community that brings together placement students from across EDF. It’s led by a voluntary committee of IPs who apply for roles within the Society and is supported by the Early Careers team.

As students are spread across different sites and business areas, the Society helps the cohort stay connected while creating opportunities for networking, development and social interaction.

By bringing the cohort together, the IP Society helps students build relationships, broaden their understanding of the business and get the most from their placement experience.

How does the IP Society enhance the placement experience?

The Society encourages students to look beyond their immediate role and explore everything EDF has to offer.

Each year’s offering depends on the direction the new committee wants to take. Previous activities have included:

·       Speaker events with senior leaders

·       Graduate and career insight sessions

·       Site visits

·       Knowledge-sharing events

·       Assessment centre preparation

·       Charity initiatives

·       Social events

·       Networking activities, including Coffee Roulette

·       Newsletters celebrating achievements from across the cohort

These experiences help students build relationships, learn about other parts of the business and develop skills they might not use in their day-to-day role.

Students can apply for committee positions within the IP Society, including Chair or Vice Chair; Communications Lead; Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Lead; Planning and Organisation Lead or Local Lead.

These roles give students the chance to develop leadership, organisation, communication and project-management skills while increasing their visibility across the business.

How does a placement year help students prepare for their future careers?

A placement year provides benefits on two levels. Firstly, it offers students the opportunity to experience what a career in their chosen field is like. For many, it’s their first experience of full-time professional work and a chance to explore different responsibilities and ways of working. This helps students gain a clearer understanding of what they enjoy, where their strengths lie, and the types of roles they may want to pursue after graduating.

Secondly, a placement year allows students to develop the skills and confidence needed to succeed in the workplace. Through real projects, collaboration with colleagues, and exposure to professional challenges, students build valuable skills such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, time management, and adaptability.

By the end of the year, students return to university with enhanced employability, greater self-confidence, and a much clearer vision of their future career path. Many also leave with a professional network, practical experience, and insights that give them a real advantage when applying for graduate roles – including at EDF.

What's your advice to students considering an Industrial Placement?

Our advice is simple: say yes to opportunities.

Take the time to meet people, ask questions and get involved in activities outside your immediate role. EDF is a large organisation with so many different career paths and experiences available.

The students who gain the most from their placement are usually the ones who stay curious, step outside their comfort zone and take ownership of their development.

Most importantly, remember that this is a learning experience. Nobody expects you to arrive on day one knowing everything, so ask questions, seek support and learn from those around you.

Come with an open mind, be willing to learn, and make the most of every opportunity available to you. If you do that, you'll leave with new skills, greater confidence and a much clearer idea of what you want from your future career.

Most importantly, enjoy the experience. A placement year is a unique opportunity to gain real-world experience, develop your confidence, and discover where your interests lie. If you make the most of the opportunities available, you'll be setting yourself up strongly for whatever comes next.

Ready to discover where a year at EDF could take you?

An Industrial Placement is your opportunity to gain real-world experience, build valuable professional skills, grow your network and explore career opportunities across one of the UK's largest energy companies.
