A Career at WMS: Sharon’s Story
Read on and discover what makes WMS such a unique place to work for Sharon.
What initially attracted you to join EDF?
Flexible working arrangements were a major factor for me, especially as I was returning to work after having my daughter. The location, hours, and flexibility were key. My friends recommended EDF as a great place to work and I was also excited by the variety of work and the opportunity to engage with a wide range of customers.
What do you enjoy most in your role?
No two days are ever the same! The UK energy market is fast-paced and constantly evolving, which keeps the work exciting and full of variety. There’s real freedom to think creatively, solve problems and make things happen. What makes WMS stand out is the mix of challenge, collaboration and energy. The teams are inclusive and innovative, creating an environment where ideas are welcomed, feedback is valued, and diversity of thought drives progress. Everyone works together with one clear focus - putting the customer first.
How would you describe working at EDF to someone unfamiliar with it?
EDF is a place where people care about the work, about doing the right thing and about each other. There’s a real mix of expertise, and you get to learn from people who are passionate about building a cleaner, more sustainable energy future. Even as a big company, EDF feels very supportive and inclusive. And we do have plenty of fun along the way, from quirky challenges like a sprout-eating world record attempt and dancing with umbrellas on YouTube, to charity bake sales and Olympic celebrations.
What’s a career moment in WMS that really mattered to you?
Running the Women in Battery Storage event was a proud moment. The whole team pulled together, and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive - attendees found it inspiring, inclusive. It was a real celebration of the fantastic women driving innovation in our sector.
What does success mean to you?
Success, to me, is being proud of the difference I make, both in my work and how I show up for others. Professionally, it’s about delivering great results while helping to create a positive, inclusive environment. Personally, it’s about feeling fulfilled and having the space to enjoy life outside work. EDF has given me opportunities to try new career paths and supported my growth, even enabling me to win Businesswoman of the Year in 2024 for Utilities!
How has EDF supported your training and development?
EDF has supported my development through a mix of technical training and industry engagement. The dedicated BESS (Battery Energy Storage Systems) courses have been invaluable, giving me a strong technical and commercial foundation in areas like storage optimisation, revenue streams and market frameworks.
I’ve also benefited from Cornwall Insight training, which keeps me up to date with wider market dynamics, policy changes and system flexibility trends.
Beyond formal training, EDF actively encourages involvement in industry networks such as the Women’s Utility Network (WUN) and the Women in Energy Storage network (WINeS). Serving as a WUN Board Member has been particularly impactful, providing access to mentoring, peer learning, leadership sessions and a vibrant community of women across the sector.
These opportunities have not only deepened my expertise but also broadened my perspective, helping me stay ahead in a fast-moving industry.
What’s next for you?
I’m keen to deepen my understanding of batteries and complete my first year with a strong technical and commercial foundation. Beyond that, I aim to take on a more prominent role, maybe leading key projects, supporting new colleagues and contributing to how we grow, innovate, and deliver real value to our customers in the battery market.
