Meet the team: Ee Jane
Want to build a career following whatever takes your interest, developing new skills along the way? That’s been Ee Jane’s story, since she joined EDF on the Science and Engineering graduate scheme in 2013. Read her blog to find out how the nuclear family has supported her from the beginning, and her tips for maximising whatever opportunity presents itself.

You work in Hinkley Point C, but do you feel part of a bigger nuclear family in EDF?
Yes, it’s evident in my everyday interactions! My role is Hinkley Point C Critical Programmes Engineering Lead. It involves working with colleagues from different parts of EDF around the country and internationally, collaborating to tackle issues and find the best engineering solutions, learning from diverse cultures and perspectives. I also bring my experience to Hinkley Point C, having worked in different parts of EDF: from operations to defueling.
As a side note, in 2024, I was also lucky enough to attend the EDF Intra-company Olympic Games in Paris and meet colleagues from the non-nuclear business as well as those from Italy, even a French island in the Caribbean! It was a good reminder of how international EDF is.
What motivated you to come and work for EDF?
The graduate scheme offered an opportunity to gain insight into how a nuclear power station works. I was intrigued, and although my degree was in mechanical engineering with nuclear, the graduate scheme helped me to understand better how nuclear power really works, with time spent in Engineering, Maintenance, Operations and other departments across different sites. Years later, I am still here – the nuclear sector has grown – along with the job and development opportunities. It’s the perfect time to work in the sector.
What are the benefits of being part of EDF’s nuclear family?
It’s the job opportunities and potential for a career for life. I have moved from being a generalist technical engineer, into a business improvement role, and now I work in engineering programme management. In between, I’ve also started the Young Professionals Network and was seconded to international organisations to consult on Young Professionals development initiatives.
I love my job. It’s not often we get to be part of building a legacy in nuclear power for the generations to come. The other perk is: I often tell people that they can’t function without us – because we make electricity!
What’s kept you at EDF?
It’s the support you get to develop yourself. I’ve had really good mentoring support, for both technical work and my personal development. People are incredibly helpful and supportive at EDF.
How do you hope to progress your career within the nuclear family?
I’m happy to go with the flow. I’m
following the business’ needs, as well as my own development interest. For now,
I want to learn more about Hinkley Point C,
hence my new job as Engineering Lead.
Does EDF’s nuclear family offer you longevity of
career?
The opportunities in the nuclear family are as
far and wide as you want them to be! If you name any job or skillset, we’re
bound to need it within the nuclear family. My top tip is don’t be afraid to
reach out to people for mentoring advice or just a coffee chat, because through
that I’ve discovered so many different areas of the business.
What are the most valuable skills and experience
you’ve had exposure to in the nuclear family?
In my technical roles it’s being able to practise the engineering skillsets I gained in my degree. On the soft skill side, it’s a bit of project management, and the networking and stakeholder engagement piece, as it can be a complicated industry.
I also developed new interpersonal skills when I set up the Young Professionals Network at EDF. I’ve since stepped away as Chair, but this enabled me to develop a lot of different touchpoints across EDF and understand how the rest of the business works. It also opened the door to other career options: I spent some time working on performance improvement, working with the Corporate and Customers’ businesses within EDF. It’s given me quite an unusual career path, but I think it shows how many opportunities there are within one company, not just the nuclear family.
My experience has been very positive. It’s a very supportive environment; when you reach out, people are there to give back and will invest in developing any new starters or those who want to learn more about anything. You just need the courage to ask!
What’s important to you in the workplace?
For me it’s about being valued for the work I’m doing
– as well as doing work that’s adding value. I get satisfaction from doing
something that’s making improvements, whether it’s improving a process for
operators on site or creating safer operations at Hinkley Point C.
Are you motivated by EDF’s purpose of helping Britain to achieve net zero?
It is a motivator, as is providing energy security. We need electricity – and we need it to be low carbon to reach our country’s net zero targets.
Sound like a place where you'd like to develop your career? We're looking for engineers, project managers, technical leads and more. Find out what career opportunities are available in EDF's nuclear family.
