From trainee to Nuclear Control Room Operator - your training and development journey

As a Nuclear Control Room Operator (known internally as a Reactor Operator), you'll play a vital role in helping generate low-carbon electricity for millions of homes and businesses. You don't need previous nuclear experience to apply. From day one, we'll support you in building the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to succeed.

Many of our operators bring experience from engineering, manufacturing, operations, the armed forces, energy and other technical or regulated environments, but no two career journeys are the same.

Over approximately 18 months, you'll progress through a combination of classroom learning, simulator training and practical development, supported by experienced colleagues every step of the way.

What you'll learn

Building your nuclear fundamentals

You'll begin by developing a strong understanding of the principles that underpin nuclear power generation, including:

  • Nuclear physics

  • Thermodynamics

  • Engineering systems and components

  • Reactor operations fundamentals

This foundation will help you build the technical knowledge needed to understand how a nuclear power station operates safely and efficiently.

Don't worry if these topics are new to you. The programme is designed to build your understanding step by step, helping you develop confidence alongside your technical knowledge.

Understanding the plant

As your knowledge grows, you'll explore the systems that make up Hinkley Point C, including:

  • Reactor systems

  • Turbine and power generation systems

  • Electrical distribution systems

  • Control and instrumentation systems

  • Essential supporting plant systems

You'll learn how these systems work together to generate low-carbon electricity safely and reliably.

Training in a realistic simulator environment

A significant part of your development takes place in our full-scope simulator, which replicates the control room environment.

You'll progressively learn how to:

  • Operate the plant during normal conditions

  • Respond to unexpected events

  • Manage abnormal plant situations

  • Support safe operation during incident and fault scenarios

  • Work effectively as part of a control room team

You'll learn these skills gradually in a safe training environment designed to help you develop confidence before operating in the real-world setting.

How you'll be supported

We know that for many people, becoming a Nuclear Control Room Operator will be a completely new challenge. That's why you'll be supported throughout your training by experienced professionals who are invested in your success.

From the start, you'll be guided by qualified EPR Operations Instructors who will support your learning and development throughout the programme.

Each trainee is also paired with a dedicated mentor, providing personalised guidance, advice and encouragement as you progress through each stage of training and develop the skills needed for the role.

You'll join a cohort of fellow trainees and have a dedicated Cohort Lead who acts as a key point of contact throughout the programme, helping to ensure you have the support you need and somewhere to turn if you have questions or concerns.

Throughout the programme, you'll receive regular feedback and coaching to help you build confidence, strengthen your technical knowledge and prepare for increasing levels of responsibility.

As your training progresses, you'll have opportunities to demonstrate what you've learned through a combination of practical exercises, simulator-based activities, technical workbooks and knowledge assessments. These are designed to support your development, track your progress and help ensure you feel confident and well prepared for each stage of your journey.

Exposure to the wider station

As a Reactor Operator trainee, you'll work closely with a variety of teams across Hinkley Point C. This gives you the opportunity to build relationships with specialists from different disciplines and develop a broader understanding of how a modern nuclear power station operates.

You'll regularly interact with engineers, maintenance teams, commissioning specialists, trainers, safety professionals and other operational colleagues, helping you gain valuable insight into the many careers and functions that contribute to the safe generation of low-carbon electricity.

This wider exposure helps many trainees build confidence, expand their professional network and develop an understanding of how their role contributes to the wider success of the station.

Your development doesn't stop there

Once you've completed the training programme, you'll continue developing your experience by supporting a range of activities across the station, which may include:

  • Commissioning and start-up activities

  • Operating from the Temporary Control Room during key project phases

  • Supporting procedure development and validation

  • Sharing your knowledge with future Reactor Operator trainees

A supported route into a unique career

Becoming a Reactor Operator is a unique and rewarding professional milestone. Through expert training, mentoring and hands-on development, we'll support you in building the knowledge, confidence and experience needed to build a long-term career at the heart of Britain's energy future.

With dedicated instructors, a personal mentor, support from your trainee cohort and opportunities to learn from colleagues across the station, you'll never be expected to navigate the journey alone.

A note from Chris, Senior Operations Manager:

“The Reactor Operator role is a crucial role within the Hinkley Point C project, supporting the safe and successful transition of the station from construction, through commissioning, and into safe and reliable operations.

For me, one of the things that makes the role so unique is the industry-leading technical training our Reactor Operators receive at our state-of-the-art training facility here at HPC. This develops the technical knowledge, practical skills and nuclear professionalism needed to operate the station safely and confidently.

But the role is about much more than the training programme. Our Reactor Operators will be directly involved in supporting a wide range of nuclear commissioning activities, many of which haven't been undertaken in the UK for over 30 years. Being part of the project at this stage gives them first-hand experience as the plant and systems are tested, commissioned and progressively brought into operation.

I believe this experience will be invaluable. We aren't just training Reactor Operators to operate the station in the future. They are part of the journey that gets us there, working alongside commissioning, engineering and specialist teams, building a detailed understanding of the plant and helping to establish the processes, standards, behaviours and culture that we will operate with for decades to come.

Ultimately, I see this as a once in a generation opportunity. You can undertake industry leading training, be involved in a historic programme of nuclear commissioning, build skills and experience that will stay with you throughout your career, and then the cherry on the cake…. become part of the team responsible for safely operating Hinkley Point C for generations to come.”
