Josh's career in nuclear at Heysham 1

Meet Josh, Technical Advice Group (TAG) Head, whose journey to success began as an Apprentice at the Heysham Power Station and has since turned into a thriving career. He shares the most rewarding aspects of his job that come with being part of the Heysham Power Station community.

How did your career journey begin?

I joined EDF as an Apprentice when I was 16. Back then, I didn’t know much about the energy industry, but I heard through family friends that the Heysham apprenticeship scheme was excellent and offered vast opportunities.

What do you enjoy most in your role at Heysham power station?

I enjoy the variety of work and engaging with so many different people from different backgrounds. There is a special atmosphere on nuclear power stations which is based around a ‘family feel’.

What’s important to you in the workplace?

It’s important to me that I have the autonomy to do my job. I also value opportunities and progression that are readily available at Heysham. Over the years, I’ve learned some valuable skills, such as public speaking and leading and developing people.

Tell us about the impact that the lifetime extension will have on your role and where would you like to take your career with EDF in the future?

The lifetime extension means more years of generating electricity. This comes with more operational issues to fix, meaning that Heysham will require a strong TAG team to support the safe and reliable generation of reactors. I want to continue my career at Heysham 1 for as long as it’s enjoyable and interesting. Further to that, I’d like to stay within the Nuclear sector.

What does Heysham area have to offer?

I live in West Lancashire, which is a fantastic local area with main transport links to most major cities. It’s also amazing having the Lake District on your doorstep.

Is there part of the rewards and benefits package do you get the most from?

I have an electric car, which is a good price, and the maintenance package is excellent.

Are you ready to take the next step towards a rewarding career? Whether you're an experienced professional seeking a new challenge or looking for a fulfilling training programme, explore our current opportunities.
