What you’ll be doing
You will take the lead in operating the harbour in full compliance with the Port Marine Safety Code (PMSC), ensuring all users can navigate the Harbour Area safely. Acting under statutory and delegated powers on behalf of the Hinkley Point C Harbour Authority (HPCHA), you’ll be the key decision-maker for resolving short-term operational issues and maintaining smooth harbour operations. You will also support and advise the Duty Holder to ensure ongoing compliance with all relevant marine safety standards.
The role requires you to coordinate jetty activities with HPC’s emergency arrangements and security procedures while maintaining strong relationships with adjacent harbours and other navigational stakeholders. These include the Maritime & Coastguard Agency, Trinity House, the Royal Yachting Association, the UK Hydrographic Office, and the Ministry of Defence at the Lilstock Firing Range. You’ll also represent the HPCHA at industry forums, supporting and, where necessary, leading HPC’s response to marine-related media and community communications.
As a suitably qualified and experienced marine professional, you will provide expert advice to the client (NNB) on all marine-related matters. This role offers the opportunity to work at the forefront of one of the UK’s largest infrastructure projects, ensuring safe and efficient marine operations in a highly dynamic environment.
Who you are
You’ll have a high level of marine expertise, with an appropriate qualification. A Harbour Master’s Certificate/Diploma or OOW Unlimited II/1 (or equivalent) will also be considered. You’ll demonstrate proven experience in harbour management at Assistant/Duty Harbour Master level or above, and you’ll have a strong understanding of PMSC compliance and stakeholder engagement with marine service providers.
You’ll bring excellent operational decision-making skills and the ability to coordinate safely in a dynamic marine environment. MCA Level 4/5P Oil Spill Commander training, a Port Facility Security Officer certificate, and an RYA VHF Short-Range Certificate (or equivalent) are essential to success in this role. A Health and Safety Management qualification (such as IOSH Managing Safely), experience of operating at Harbour Board level, and involvement in major infrastructure projects would be advantageous.
If this sounds like you then we’d love to hear from you!
Closing date for applications: 12th August 2025
