About the Role

At EDF, Success is Personal. We don’t define it, you do. Join our Chemistry Industrial Placement and you’ll shape your future while helping Britain achieve net zero. You’ll take on real responsibilities, learn from experienced professionals, and contribute to meaningful projects at one of our operational nuclear sites.

“Electricity is such a vital component in everyone’s lives. It powers schools, businesses and hospitals, so I knew that if I did my placement within EDF then I would have a really large impact on society, and that made my placement a lot more fulfilling.” Priyanka, Science and Engineering Industrial Placement

The Opportunity

This 12-month placement offers a starting salary of £26,050 and the chance to work at our Heysham 2 Power Station. You’ll join our Chemistry Team, gaining hands-on experience in a junior role while being supported by skilled colleagues.

You’ll apply your academic knowledge to real-world challenges in the energy industry. From chemical safety and control to data automation and condition monitoring, this placement offers a wide range of learning opportunities that will help you grow professionally and personally.

What You’ll Experience

Over the course of this 12-month programme, you'll have the opportunity to immerse yourself in hands-on learning, working on real-world challenges that directly impact the energy industry. Most of your learning will be on the job, supported by your mentor and the teams around you. You’ll have a chance to apply your academic training to genuine industry problems while completing modules that contribute towards your degree.

Previous students on a Chemistry Industrial Placement have been involved in projects such as:

•    Supporting improvements to safety through communications campaigns, training, and other improvement projects.
•    Controlling system chemistry to achieve our lifetime ambition and support a wide range of industrial lab analytical techniques.
•    Building the skills necessary to support a wide range of teams in order to provide advice on chemical control and chemical safety.
•    Assisting in running, maintaining, and developing the condition monitoring programme.
•    Automation of data acquisition to support improved station efficiencies to maximise our zero-carbon output.

Your Work Location

You’ll be based at our Heysham 2 Power Station, where you’ll work on site and connect with colleagues across the business.

Who You Are

To be eligible for this EDF industrial placement you should be on track to achieve, or have already achieved, a 2:2 undergraduate or postgraduate degree in Chemistry.

It is a requirement that those who join us have the right to work in the UK. Whilst sponsorship may be a possibility, we reserve the right in our decisions to give priority to those who already have the right to work in the UK.

To be appointed to this role, you will need to meet the criteria for Security Vetting, which will, ordinarily, require you to have been a resident of the UK for at least three of the past five years.

Pay, Benefits and Culture

Alongside a starting salary of at least £26,050 per annum and a market-leading pension scheme, your package will include customisable benefits such as electric vehicle leasing, discounted gym membership, life assurance, tech vouchers, experience days, and more.

At EDF, we believe there are multiple definitions of what it means to succeed. That’s why we offer you the freedom to develop a career that’s unique to you. Here, Success is Personal – it’s your journey, powered by us.

Everyone is welcome at EDF; we’re committed to building a workforce that reflects gender balance, social mobility, and inclusion of minority ethnic backgrounds, LGBTQ+ communities, and those with disabilities.

As a Disability Confident employer, we're committed to creating an accessible recruitment process and encourage candidates to tell us about any support they may need. Should you disclose a disability and meet the minimum criteria (which will include holding a relevant degree discipline/grade and achieving the required pass mark for Stage 1 Testing) for the role you’ll be progressed to the first stage of the selection process. Some of our roles at EDF attract large volumes of applications. When this happens, we’ll apply the Disability Confident scheme’s guidance on taking practical and appropriate steps selecting disabled candidates who best meet the minimum criteria for the job.

Our Recruitment Process

We'll guide you through every stage and keep you updated along the way. You'll be supported by real people, with opportunities to ask questions, learn more and receive feedback where possible.

For our Early Careers Programmes, we use a combination of automated decision-making, assessment technology and human review.
