About the Role

The Opportunity

Exciting and rewarding opportunities have arisen at Heysham 2 Power Station, to join our highly skilled and motivated Power Generation Team as a Shift Operations Engineer. If you have a background in power generation and/or plant operations, this may be the ideal position for you.

You will undertake a comprehensive training program both in the classroom and simulator and upon successful authorisation you will be appointed as a Duly Authorised Person under the Station’s Site Licence. 

Primarily, once authorised, you will be responsible for reactor/turbine unit operations including operations and supervision, routine surveillance, testing, and plant efficiency monitoring. 

In addition to your position as a Reactor Desk Engineer, you will receive training to be authorised as a Senior Authorised Person under the Company’s electrical and mechanical safety rules.

Working as a member of the shift team, you will undertake mandatory training and qualification to become a member of the station’s Emergency Scheme which requires the wearing of personal Breathing Apparatus so you would be required to be clean shaven.

What you’ll be doing

On successful completion of the training program, you will:  

  • Ensure that all department activities are carried out within the boundaries of site licence requirements, statutory regulations, company and local directives, procedures and Safety Rules.
  • Demonstrate detailed knowledge of operations and leadership in directing short-term activities.
  • Monitor and trend plant performance, taking action to maintain plant within its normal operating range.
  • Log activities to maintain clear indication of plant status, events and tasks performed.
  • Perform emergency scheme duties for which you are trained, in any emergency.
  • Manipulate plant changeovers or perform testing to support the Work Management process.
  • Where required, support the business through the temporary secondment from Shift to Day working.
  • Support the outage process (forced, statutory and refuelling) by the provision of resource and technical skills and knowledge.
  • Assist the station with ad-hoc projects, investigations and self-assessments within your own field of expertise.

Who are you?

You must hold a minimum of an HNC or equivalent qualification in a relevant engineering subject, although candidates with qualifications appropriate for Chartered Engineer status will have an advantage.

Previous experience and knowledge of power plant operation is also advantageous.
