SEIC or HPC, Bridgwater - with flexibility of working from home, minimum 3 days a week in the office.
Are you a skilled HSE professional looking for the next step in your career? Do you have experience in health and safety with a strong background in construction or engineering environments? Are you the type of person who likes a fast-paced environment and likes to be challenged? If so, come and join EDF as the Head of Health and Safety for the Client!
The Opportunity
As the Head of Health and Safety (Client), you’ll ensure full compliance with conventional health and safety legislation across Hinkley Point C, while promoting best practices throughout the project and associated work locations. You’ll oversee the organisational performance of both the project and supply chain, ensuring adherence to the Health and Safety at Work Act and relevant legal requirements, including the CDM Regulations across the design, construction, and commissioning phases of HPC.
Additionally, you’ll provide support to other nuclear new build projects where EDFE is a key shareholder or partner. You’ll manage relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, including regulators and shareholders, to align health and safety standards across the organisation.
Representing the HPC Client Organisation, you’ll set expectations for health and safety across the construction project while fostering collaboration with stakeholders and the wider industry at national and international levels.
Pay, benefits and culture
Alongside a competitive salary and a market-leading pension scheme, your package will include a range of benefits, from the big and formal to the small and personal.
We’re talking about everything from enhanced parental leave to electric vehicle leasing, health insurance to product discounts, critical illness insurance to technology vouchers, gym membership to season ticket loans.
At EDF UK, we embrace flexibility while recognising that everyone's working needs are different. Whether you're in our office spaces, on site, or working remotely, we promote an environment that supports collaboration, connection, and comfort. No matter where you are, our priority is to make sure you feel safe, valued, and celebrated.
Here, we do right by each other and everyone’s welcome. We’re on an action-oriented journey, championing equity, diversity, and inclusion. We’re a disability confident employer and we’ll do all we can to help with your application. Please let us know if you need to request reasonable adjustments.
We take pride in fostering a dynamic and inclusive environment, where the diverse backgrounds and experiences of our employees drive fresh thinking and innovation. We understand that success means different things to different people. We believe there are multiple definitions of what it means to succeed. That’s why we support you to pursue a career that’s unique to you. Because success is personal.
What you’ll be doing
You will lead and coordinate departmental activities to ensure compliance with health and safety standards. This includes supporting the HPC project throughout its lifecycle, making sure policies and strategies align with legal requirements and construction excellence. Monitoring safety arrangements on the HPC construction site, marine works, and Principal Design Authority activities to meet Client CDM responsibilities will also be part of your role. Additionally, you will be responsible for driving continuous improvement initiatives.
In this role, you will be essential in developing effective workforce and trade union relationships by participating in consultative committees. Organising and supporting the HPC Safety, Health, and Environment Committee (SHEC) and Leadership Team (SHELT) meetings, events like the annual CEO Safety Seminar, will also be your responsibility. Furthermore, working closely with the Site Construction Director and Project Director, you will drive safety performance improvements, preparing monthly health and safety reports to the HPC project board and Safety and Health Executive Committee.
You will represent the organisation at national health and safety committees and EDF Energy safety development committees, ensuring alignment with the new build business. As a leader, you will manage the Client Health and Safety team, ensuring robust and effective assurance takes place.
Who you are
A degree or equivalent in Science or Engineering is favourable, but not essential, with a Management qualification being a plus. Experience in a construction or engineering environment, along with leadership experience, is desirable. You should be comfortable working with external bodies, including the media.
You’ll have significant HSE experience, including managing a team in a large project setting. NEBOSH or IOSH certifications are required, as well as a strong knowledge of CDM Regulations and national/international HSE standards. Experience working with UK Trade Unions and the ability to build relationships within EDF and the construction industry will be key.
You’ll be results-driven with strong teamwork skills and comfortable working in a large corporate environment. Excellent communication is essential, along with knowledge of large operations and process plants. You should have a proven track record in safety, an understanding of Licence Conditions, and be familiar with tools like OPEX to support your work.
If this sounds like you then we’d love to hear from you!
Closing date for applications: 21st April 2025.
