System Engineer - Mechanical

Hunterston B Power Station is based near West Kilbride, Ayrshire. It is one of our advanced gas-cooled reactor (AGR) power stations with a generating capacity of 860MW of electricity, the equivalent of supplying over 1 million homes.

Nature and Scope

We are currently seeking motivated and enthusiastic individuals to take on a Mechanical Engineer role at Hunterston B Power Station, West Kilbride.  The specific role available will be within the Engineering Department on site reporting to the relevant Engineering Group Head.  Dependant on skills, experience and preference the appointment may be allocated to any one of these roles.

Principal Accountabilities

Principal Accountabilities

The detailed competencies and accountabilities will be dependent on the engineering role assigned but there are a number of common accountabilities within all Engineering roles.  These include, but are not limited to,

  • Ensure that all activities are carried out with full regard to agreed Safety Standards and Expectations, Site Licence requirements, statutory regulations , company and local directives, procedures and Safety Rules and ensure that they are in compliance with the Station Quality Manual such that the prescribed service levels, standards and targets are being met;
  • Provide oversight and support the production of design changes and plant modifications as required;
  • Maintain up to date records of all drawings, specifications, manuals, design standards, engineering calculations and supporting data for plant systems, structures and components;
  • Provide technical oversight and support to all physical work carried out on behalf of the station

Specific Mechanical Engineer Roles and Responsibilities

  • Source of technical expertise on a system and acts as the technical conscience of the station;
  • Set the maintenance strategy for each system;
  • Monitor and evaluate system status (performance, trends and issues) and develop System Action Plans to address deficiencies and drive improvements in system performance;
  • Produce Equipment Reliability Reviews for Plant Systems.
  • Conduct Plant Walkdowns and produce Walkdown reports;
  • Provide and interface between Station, Projects Division and Central Support Functions on design change issues;
  • Provide technical design input and support to projects;
  • Author, verify and support the management of Engineering Change (EC) proposals;
  • Act as Responsible Engineer and Project Manager in support of Station modifications;

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience

To be considered for the Mechanical Engineering at Hunterston, you will closely match the following skills, experience and qualifications;
Entry Qualifications - As a minimum, entrants will have a relevant HNC (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline. Candidates with a relevant Degree may have an advantage. 

A knowledge and understanding of relevant industry standards for systems important to safety and have a proven track record in their use to justify such systems in a highly regulated environment.

The ability to communicate complex issues effectively and build strong working relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
