Nuclear Safety Engineer

As we move into the next stage of our power station’s lifecycle, here at Dungeness B Power Station we’re hoping you can join us in this key role for nuclear safety. We have recently commenced the defueling phase of operation and this is an exciting opportunity to be a key player in the success of this transition.

The Opportunity

As a Nuclear Safety Engineer, you’ll be providing the oversight for the Fuel Free Verification Process, working with stakeholders from around the Engineering department to ensure we stay on track and to budget throughout this crucial time. Our high safety standards are of course paramount to everyone’s responsibilities on the station and you will have the significant role of maintaining the Station Safety Case throughout the defueling period as we prepare for decommissioning. You’ll focus on oversight across the station, providing you with the opportunity of exposure to the full range of station activities.

This is a four-year, fixed term position to support this key period of work and transition.

What you’ll be doing

Your everyday roles and responsibilities will include:

• Maintaining Tech Specs and Living Safety Case documents to reflect any changes to the Safety Case or to take account of relevant plant changes
• Advising on the application of Tech Specs and providing assistance in determining whether plant can be claimed to be fully performing its safety function
• Authoring/verifying Engineering Change submission to modify Safety Case Arguments, Tech Spec or plant items
• Providing nuclear safety specialist assessment to assist in providing appropriate Safety Case arguments for simple plant modification and providing a station view on the practicalities of implementation for centrally produced Cat 1/Cat 2 modifications
• Supporting the defence in depth process through defueling
• Supporting the Emergency Scheme to provide advice on cooling strategy in fault conditions
• Supporting decision making on station by providing appropriate challenge to ensure bias for safety
• Providing an interface with internal (INA) and external (ONR) regulators to explain and support the station’s Safety Case position.

More experienced NSEs would be expected to become Categorisers and Case Officers for Engineering Changes.

Who you are

You’ll need to be educated to a minimum of HNC level and/or working towards a relevant degree. It may be advantageous if your qualifications are in a science or engineering discipline. Key authorisations in Safety Case Management (AV3/AV2, Responsible Engineer) would be an advantage, as would knowledge of EDF Safety Cases (particularly those involving fuel handling).

To be appointed to this role, you will need to meet the criteria for Security Vetting which will, ordinarily, require you to have been a resident of the UK for at least 3 of the last 5 years.
