Environmental Safety Technician

The opportunity


As part of the Environmental Safety Team, this is a key role in the implementation of radiological protection standards and supports compliance with company standards and UK legislation. It’s a varied role, working with your team and on independent projects. In your team, you’ll be liaising on the issues at hand, building cross departmental relationships and working flexibly to the demands of the role. When working independently, you’ll be responding to issues or queries in a decisive and effective manner, whilst maintaining a high level of quality and reliability in your role. Your good communication skills and motivation and drive will be key to your success in the role!

We can offer a competitive salary from £32,659 - £43,009 and you’ll be appointed based on the parameters outlined in the Nuclear Generation Company Agreement as well as your existing salary, competence, experience and qualifications.

What you’ll be doing

 

You’ll be responsible for the delivery of health physics monitoring to Level 3 standard in order to support compliance with relevant legislation, station operations and maintenance processes. You’ll be required to become a classified person under the Ionising Radiation Regulations and therefore must be 18 years or above.
 

Following your training and authorisation into the role, you’ll have a wide variety of responsibilities, including:

  • Measuring levels of radiation, recording results and reporting as necessary
  • Carrying out routine and job specific radiological surveys
  • Assisting colleagues at boundaries of contamination-controlled areas, checking that protective clothing, such as breathing apparatus, are in good order, worn correctly and safely monitored
  • Issuing and collecting personnel dosimetry, assisting in the management of the electronic personnel dosimetry system and maintaining records
  • Setting up, calibrating and commissioning radiological measuring equipment, checking all instruments and apparatus are in good order and reporting defects
  • Assisting in processing active waste 
  • Decontaminating small items of plant
  • Carrying out environmental sample collection and analysis in line with the district survey program, including limited radiochemical work to comply with effluent discharge authorisations. 

 

Who you are


As a minimum, you’ll be educated to GCSE/National Qualification standards (or equivalent). If these qualifications include "C" and above grade passes in English and Mathematics, it may be an advantage. You must hold a full valid UK driving licence. Previous Health Physics Monitoring experience is preferred, however not essential as full training is given. 

 

To be appointed to this role, you will need to meet the criteria for Security Vetting which will, ordinarily, require you to have been a resident of the UK for at least 3 of the last 5 years.
