The Opportunity
As our next Radiological Protection Team Leader (RPTL), you will play a pivotal role in shaping the operational radiological protection capability at Hinkley Point C (HPC). This dynamic position involves leading the radiological protection technician programme, managing the pre-operational Radiological Protection Technicians, and ensuring their readiness for the challenges of an operational environment.

What you will be doing
With a focus on both practical arrangements, such as equipment and facilities, and the training and competency of the team, the RPTL will oversee the development of HPC’s radiological monitoring capability. Drawing on their hands-on experience in workplace radiological monitoring, the RPTL will provide expert guidance, mentoring, and coaching to trainees and apprentices, ensuring they are fully prepared for operational readiness. Additional roles and responsibilities include:
- Oversee the competency of Radiological Protection Technicians, ensuring the team receives appropriate training aligned with the project's work scope and phases.
- Develop and validate radiological protection work instructions, procedures, monitoring programmes, and training to maintain high operational standards.
- Provide expert advice and guidance for specifying and procuring radiological protection facilities and equipment within assigned responsibilities.
- Supervise radiological monitoring and services during construction, commissioning, and operational phases, ensuring a robust radiological safety culture is upheld.
- Coordinate and perform radiological monitoring tasks to support HPC construction and commissioning teams, including flexibility to work night shifts when required.
- Promote UK best practices in radiological protection by participating in benchmarking activities and peer reviews to enhance project development.
Who you are
With a strong foundation as a qualified Radiation Protection Technician or Health Physics Monitor, you bring valuable expertise and practical experience to the table. Your ability to develop and implement new processes showcases your proactive approach and adaptability in dynamic environments will be essential. Having worked on a nuclear licensed site, you are well-versed in maintaining compliance and operational excellence. Additionally, your experience managing inventories of instruments, radioactive sources, and other radiological protection equipment highlights your attention to detail, organisational skills, and commitment to ensuring the highest standards of safety and efficiency.
Additional desirable requirements for this role include:
- Hold a nationally recognised Level 2 qualification in Radiological Protection or Health Physics Monitoring (e.g., Apprenticeship, NVQ Level 2 Diploma, or Level 2 Underpinning Knowledge Certificate).
- Practical experience working with Pressurised Water Reactors (PWRs), showcasing specialised industry knowledge.
- Proven ability to lead projects or programs, preferably within a multi-disciplinary team environment.
- Expertise in developing, implementing, and reviewing practical radiation protection systems, including work instructions, procedures, monitoring programs, and training initiatives.
- Previously appointed as a Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS), demonstrating leadership in radiological safety.
