The Opportunity
As our next Radioactive Waste Specialist, you’ll be instrumental in building operational capabilities, ensuring compliance with radioactive waste regulations, and overseeing effective management practices. Your responsibilities will include planning and implementing compliance arrangements while also developing a comprehensive training program to support the operational team’s expertise. Initially part of the Pre-Operations team, this role will seamlessly transition to support HPC as it moves into full operation, making your impact integral to its success.

What you will be doing
In this position, your role will be critical to ensure that Hinkley Point C can operate efficiently and in full compliance with radioactive waste requirements. You will focus on preparing and managing permits for radioactive materials, as well as meeting all permit and license conditions. Success in this role relies on establishing robust arrangements to meet regulatory requirements while ensuring the team has the necessary skills, training, and capabilities. Your work will directly contribute to making sure our radioactive waste systems are fully operational and compliant when the station becomes active. Additional responsibilities in this role include:
- Provide technical expertise in areas such as radioactive discharges (liquid and gaseous), solid low-level radioactive waste disposals, and compliance with the HPC RSR permit.
- Coordinate and contribute to the creation of operational documentation and arrangements for radioactive waste management.
- Support the specification and procurement of environmental facilities and equipment related to radioactive waste management.
- Work towards becoming a member of the Corporate Radioactive Waste Adviser body at HPC, offering authoritative advice to support station operations.
- Assist in delivering EDF Energy’s environmental commitments and permit information requirements while supporting regulatory engagement.
- Champion best practices in nuclear, chemical, industrial, and environmental safety across the project.
- Act as a positive force within Technical and Safety teams and the broader operational organisation.
Who you are
To be successful in this role, we’re looking for you to hold expertise in radioactive substances and waste management, you bring a wealth of knowledge and skills to navigate complex regulatory environments effectively. Your ability to build strong relationships, influence stakeholders, and collaborate seamlessly with diverse teams is complemented by a proactive approach and the capability to work both independently and as part of a team. These strengths position you as an asset in ensuring compliance and driving success in challenging operational settings. Additional requirements for this role include:
- Solid understanding of radioactive substances and radioactive waste legislation, policy, regulatory guidance, and standards.
- Proven track record of relationship building, stakeholder management, and fostering collaboration in complex environments.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently with initiative and contribute effectively to team-focused environments.
- Degree qualified or equivalent in a relevant discipline would be advantageous however, not essential.
