The Opportunity


We are currently recruiting a key leadership role for our Hinkley Point C site and future operations organisation, HPC Operations Manager - EPR. 


Hinkley Point C will be a twin unit ‘state of the art’ European Pressurised Water Reactor. Each Unit will generate some 4500MW of heat energy and in total will supply the National Grid with around 3.2 GW of CO2 free electricity, suppling low-carbon electricity for around 6 million homes in the UK.


As the Operations Manager for HPC you will determine the operations and resourcing strategy for the nuclear operation of Hinkley Point C through construction, commissioning and into commercial operation. You will be responsible for building, leading and setting the nuclear safety culture of the future Operations Department.


Initially this position will be part of the Pre-Operations Team working for the Pre-Operations Director. After a suitable transition period you will take over leadership of the ‘Operate the Plant Programme’ with the focus on Operational strategy, resourcing and driving the operational area of the Plant Management team (handover and safety rules). As part of the transition to the Operational organisation, you will assume the role of Operations Manager and monitor the training and development of the control room staff and operate technicians.


They will be actively involved in the resourcing of future operations staff in line with the overall project schedule.


At the appropriate time, once the Senior Operational Management Team is appointed this role will transfer to the HPC Nuclear Operations Department under the Plant Manager and assume to full responsibility for delivery of the operations function.


This is a senior management position within Nuclear New Build (NNB) and subsequently will transfer to the HPC Station Plant Management Team. The mandate for the Station Plant Management Team is to ensure safe and reliable operation of the plant within its design basis, maintaining statutory and legislative compliance. As a senior member of the Plant Management team, you will be responsible for placing emphasis on a cross functional approach to achieving operational goals and performance improvements.

The Person


As the HPC Operations Manager, you will be responsible for but not limited to the below;


•    Department safety policies and Management of Operations policy, in line with site licence requirements, statutory requirements, safety rules and station and company procedures.
•    Establish close links with Commissioning, the Mechanical Electrical and HVAC team and Joint Design Office to ensure Operational support to all activities that are linked to delivering the construction and commissioning plan. In addition, strong relationships will need to be built and maintained with EDF (Edvance, DPN etc) and the Technical Client Organisation to ensure arrangements are in place for future operational support (i.e. documentation).
•    You will represent EDF in all aspects of operations and work with the Pre-Operations Management Team on the implementation of the operations strategy and plans. 
•    Working closely with the Plant Management Team Lead, you will provide oversight, support and strategic direction to direct reports and the Operations Lead Team.
•    Engage with relevant trade union relations and forums and develop effective working relationships.
•    Establish a close working relationship with the UK nuclear fleet, EPR peer groups for maintaining fleet wide standards and continually improving performance.
•    You will have direct accountability for the functioning, effectiveness, productivity and output quality of all operations on site.
•    Provide oversight, support and strategic direction to the Operations leaders.
•    Monitor and assesses services provided by outside organisations and contract partners to ensure they meet required standards with respect to safety, quality and productivity.
•    Be responsible for safety, quality and the productivity of personnel within the department.
•    Ascertain that staffing and resources within the department are sufficient and operations staff have requisite knowledge, skill and proficiency to accomplish tasks to achieve safe and reliable plant operation.
•    Use creative and innovative techniques ways of working to ensure the future HPC Operations department takes advantages of new and forward-thinking techniques to maintain an efficient and agile workforce.


Eventually, as a member of the Station Management Lead Team, you will work closely with other members of the lead team to deliver plant availability and reliability through leading in the areas of operational focus and operational excellence to ensure safe and reliable operation of the plant.


As Operations Manager you will routinely be in the field monitoring, observing and assessing personnel performance to maintain and reinforce high standards of nuclear professionalism. Motivating the team to continuously improve performance by encouraging initiative and removing barriers. 

The Skills


•    Substantial knowledge of technical aspects of nuclear and conventional plant and a detailed knowledge of the site licence conditions and legislation associated with the safe operation of the station. 
•    A broad-based understanding of Operations, Maintenance, Work Management, Engineering, Health Physics, Chemistry and Outage Management.
•    You will ideally be qualified to degree level in a technical or engineering field (or acceptable equivalents).
•    Experience in power generation within Operations and qualified (or previously qualified) as a Duly Authorised Person (DAP) at a nuclear power station is essential. 
•    Proven leadership skills and a strong influencer with exceptional interpersonal skills with a track record of delivering results.
•    Consultation and negotiation skills to ensure effective working relationships are developed and maintained with stakeholders including Trade Union and staff forum colleagues.
•    Relevant leadership and management experience or equivalent. Experience should cover leading teams and managing performance, event recovery, participation in executing a successful outage, project management, improvement cycles, budget management, peer reviews, e.g. WANO missions.
•    Experience of commissioning processes would be beneficial.
