Marine Ecologist (Sizewell C)

Employment basis: The role is expected to be a full- time position however we are open to discussing a more flexible or part- time approach where possible.

The Opportunity

Following on from the success of Hinkley Point C (HPC), the SZC Project is a nuclear new build project in Suffolk, which has obtained planning approval and Government financing support. The project has started construction and is now seeking private investment. When completed, it will provide dependable electricity to 6 million homes for 60 years, which along with renewables, will support Britain to achieve Net Zero by 2050.

 

We have a fantastic opportunity for a Marine Ecologist.

 

Our teams are set up to work flexibly, with a hybrid working approach between our offices and your home. We provide a full suite of IT equipment to ensure that our employees can work from home comfortably and effectively when appropriate.


The Role

 

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Marine Ecologist to join our Environmental Consenting and Assurance team. The successful candidate will support the ongoing ecological monitoring and assessment programs related to the development and operation of Sizewell C, with a focus on ensuring that marine habitats and species are protected and managed in accordance with environmental regulations and best practices.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

Provide subject matter expert advice on coastal and marine ecology to the SZC project, in particular to the main construction site.

 

Provide subject matter expert advice on marine consenting matters to the SZC main development site

 

Provide expertise on best practice for construction in the marine environment

 

Act as SZC Ltd’s intelligent customer for oversight of relevant marine construction and monitoring activities

 

Collaborate with environmental consultants, project managers, and engineers to develop and implement effective mitigation and enhancement measures.

 

Contribute to environmental impact assessments (EIAs), regulatory reports, and license applications, ensuring compliance with the Marine Management Organisation (MMO), Environment Agency, and other relevant authorities.

 

Provide expert advice on the protection and management of marine habitats, species, and biodiversity.

 

Participate in stakeholder engagement with local communities, environmental organizations, and regulatory bodies, presenting ecological findings and addressing concerns related to marine ecology.

 

Maintain up-to-date knowledge of UK and international marine ecological legislation, policies, and guidelines, applying this knowledge to ensure project compliance

 

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience

 

Essential

 

Bachelors degree in marine ecology, marine environmental science or related marine subject

 

Strong understanding, and significant experience of working within marine environmental and planning, guidance,  legislation and good practice as it relates to construction and infrastructure projects, including:

 

Marine & Coastal Access Act (2009)

The Planning Act (2008)

The Environmental Protection Act 1990

 

Detailed knowledge of marine environmental mitigation control measures.

 

Strong problem solving and organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise workload effectively.

 

Must be able to work independently and as an integrated member of the Marine Environment Team, the Environmental Consenting and Assurance team and the wider SZC project team.

 

Excellent oral and written communication skills, including be able to effectively negotiate and influence others.

 

Accuracy and attention to detail, with the ability to see projects through from start to finish.

 

Pro-active approach to working and ability to project manage site activities.

 

Experience of managing marine environmental compliance on large infrastructure/engineering projects.

 

Desirable

 

Higher degree in marine ecology, marine environmental science or related marine subject

 

Knowledge of the marine environmental aspects of the SZC project, including the DML, DCO, CoCP and subordinate management plans.

 

Experience of regulating or providing oversight and assurance on a large infrastructure/engineering project, including experience of successfully challenging inappropriate activities and behaviours

 

Experience of developing relationships or working with regulators.

 

Knowledge and experience of general environmental management on construction sites.
