Maintenance & Operations Engineering Technician Apprenticeship

At EDF, an apprenticeship is a platform for your future career. Alongside learning transferable skills and earning industry qualifications, we will empower you to explore your potential and realise your passion, because here, success is personal.

The reason for choosing this apprenticeship was because I enjoy being hands on and have an interest in the nuclear industry.  My time staying away from home is one of the highlights, as it’s given me some freedom and taught me a lot of life skills. It also gives you the chance to make new friends and experience things you wouldn’t normally. I have found the chance to get back onto site and experience the power station really valuable. This has given me the chance to put what I have learnt into context and to have an insight into station life” Emily, Apprentice.

I think this statement above needs to be after what the role involves. I think we need to pass on the role information, before you offer people an insight into someone else’s opinion of it.

EDF is leading the transition to a cleaner, low emission, electric future and helping tackle climate change. We are generating the right mix of wind, nuclear and solar electricity to power the nation, whatever the weather. We would love for you to join us on our journey to help Britain achieve Net Zero, together.

Our Maintenance & Operations Engineering Technician Apprenticeship Opportunity

We are recruiting for apprentices to join our Maintenance and Operations Engineering Technician training programme working at one of our nuclear power stations in the UK.

During your apprenticeship you will be looking to make an impact – using your skills, knowledge and passion to achieve great things. So how about taking on the challenge of helping beat climate change?

We offer a four-year programme that focuses on the hands-on skills required to maintain our power stations. During the programme, you will develop specialist practical and theoretical skills to work in the Maintenance department at one of our nuclear power stations.

Our Pay, Benefits, and Culture

Alongside a starting salary of £16,345 and a market-leading pension scheme, your package will include a range of benefits, from the big and formal to the small and personal.

We’re talking about everything from electric vehicle leasing to gym membership, health insurance to product discounts, critical illness insurance to technology vouchers, season ticket loans to enhanced parental leave.

At EDF, we embrace flexibility while recognising that everyone's working needs are different. Whether you're in our office spaces, on site, or working remotely, we promote an environment that supports collaboration, connection, and comfort. No matter where you are, our priority is to make sure you feel safe, valued, and celebrated.

Here, we do right by each other and everyone’s welcome. We’re on an action-oriented journey, championing equity, diversity, and inclusion. Our commitment is to have an equal gender balance, represent a broad mix of people from minority ethnic backgrounds, the LGBTQ+ community, people with a disability and colleagues from a disadvantaged background.

We’re a disability confident employer and we’ll do all we can to help with your application. Please let us know if you need to request reasonable adjustments.

We take pride in fostering a dynamic and inclusive environment, where the diverse backgrounds and experiences of our team members drive fresh thinking and innovation. We understand that success means different things to different people. There’s no single definition — it's about individuality. That’s why we give you the freedom to pursue a career that’s unique to you. Because success is personal.

Training, development and support for you

In the first two years of the programme, you will be based at the National College for Nuclear, which is part of Bridgwater and Taunton College in Somerset.

You will have access to state-of-the-art nuclear training facilities including a virtual reality environment, computer-equipped training rooms, recreation and collaboration spaces, sports facilities and student accommodation which was rated outstanding by Ofsted in 2024!  It’s here that you’ll get your introduction to engineering and develop a strong skills foundation.

As well as the technical side, we will help you develop the behaviours essential to the safe operation of our power stations. Part of this programme also covers the development of life skills, such as teamwork, personal confidence and communication.

During your final two years you will be based at your EDF location. You will work alongside and learn from qualified professionals, developing your knowledge and skills at the same time as completing your academic and vocational qualifications.

You will also have the support of a Station Apprentice Coordinator to offer guidance whilst you learn about working on a power station.

Upon completion of your apprenticeship, you will be awarded a Maintenance and Operations Engineering Technician (MOET) Apprenticeship Certificate. By this point, you will also have gained a BTEC Level 3 as well as an excellent selection of practical skills. It is everything you need to start your career and there may also be the option to progress onto further education such as an HNC.

In the future, you could take on people management responsibilities and develop into a Maintenance Team Leader. Or you could also choose to pursue a technical route and take your first steps towards becoming an Engineer.

Head to our Careers page www.edfenergy.com/careers for more information about the programme and Apprentice life at EDF.

Where you will work

You will be based at the National College for Nuclear Southern Hub in Somerset, for the first two years, and we can provide you with accommodation here if you do not live locally. You will then be based at your EDF location for years 3 and 4 which will be Sizewell B Power Station.

Who you are

To be eligible for this apprenticeship programme, you’ll have five GCSEs at Grade C or above (or Grade 4 and above in the new GCSE grading structure), National 5 or equivalent, including maths, English and two science or technical subjects.

Our skills-based hiring approach for this programme will explore your current skills as well as your interest in acquiring new skills. Following successful completion of online testing, you will be invited to a technical interview followed by an Assessment Centre at a later date.
