Community Relations - Senior Manager

The Opportunity

As part of our plan to secure a low-carbon energy future, EDF’s Nuclear New Build (NNB) team is leading an ambitious programme to build a fleet of safe, reliable nuclear power stations in the UK, focussed on two new nuclear power stations, the first since Sizewell B in 1995. The first station is under construction at Hinkley Point C (HPC) in Somerset, and NNB’s ambition is to build a second at Sizewell C (SZC) in Suffolk. The SZC project is currently in the development phase, with UK public policy; financing; commercial and construction arrangements being established. The intention is to begin construction of the project at the end of 2022.

 

The support of Suffolk stakeholders is critical for the success of the SZC Project. Engagement with local and regional stakeholders, through effective community relations, is a core project function. The Community Relations – Senior Manager will lead on engagement with residents living near the main and associated development sites for the SZC Project and will be responsible for the project’s community relations strategy, relationship building, as well as managing expectations, by dealing with issues raised by the community in an open, honest and timely fashion.

The Role

 

As Community Relations – Senior Manager you will build on existing and create new relationships with external stakeholders, providing accurate information to improve people’s understanding of the SZC project, promote the project’s benefits and develop third party advocacy. You will also inform and liaise with the Delivery Team about the expectations of our stakeholders to help ensure our planning obligations are met, while providing the community with timely updates about the construction schedule and highlighting the project’s achievements. One of your most important strategic tasks will be to identify community issues experienced during construction and to work within the project to propose suitable outcomes which manage those issues as satisfactorily as possible.

 

Based at the SZC Information Office, Leiston, you will be reporting into the Head of Regional External Affairs & Development (READ), leading a growing community relations team principally responsible for:


•    Drafting and leading on the SZC Community Relations strategy
•    Delivery of day-to-day community relations in support of the project
•    Being the key READ team contact with residents living near the main development and associated development sites
•    Managing the work of a supporting agency (pre-FID) and community relations team members 
•    Supporting the Head of READ by building relationships (existing and new) with a wide range of local stakeholder groups
•    Leading the work of the local Traffic and Transport Workings Groups and the Main Development Site Forum
•    Engagement with the Communications Team to ensure consistent messaging and integrated planning and communications relating to the project. 
•    Identifying speaking opportunities, delivering presentations, and supporting other authorised speakers on the SZC project
•    Overseeing the production of the SZC newsletters and other publications 
•    Sit on the panel of Neighbourhood Fund, determining grants
•    Mapping stakeholders and issues management, identifying supportive residents and third-party advocates for the project

The Skills

 

To be successful in this role you will demonstrate:


•    Degree qualification in relevant subject and/or commensurate experience
•    A dynamic professional, experienced in communicating with stakeholders ranging from the general public to MPs, facilitating the delivery of long term business objectives
•    Experience in managing a busy community relations team
•    Ability to draft a broad range of written communications to the highest standard; using expertise and experience to identify the right channels and styles for specific audiences
•    Experience in giving presentations to a variety of audiences, with the ability to carefully deliver particularly difficult messages and project empathy to the public and individual local residents
•    Ability to provide communications advice and support to senior managers and technical teams
•    A strong political acumen and good knowledge of how the media works
