The Opportunity


With these positions working at Hinkley Point B, your will be responsible for delivering the required standards and processes in Chemistry, Radiological Protection and Environmental Protection. This ensures the safe and reliable operation of the nuclear power plant in accordance with all regulations and licences and in compliance with the requirements of regulating bodies, company business strategies and industry best practices.


Your focus will be on operational radiological protection and following suitable training and development, be expected to take on the roles of Accredited Health Physicist and Accredited Radioactive Waste Engineer. You’ll be required by the Company to undertake a role in the emergency scheme leading to that of Emergency Scheme Health Physicist. This will necessitate you being on a standby rota.

The Role


As an Accredited Health Physicist / Accredited Radiological waste Engineer, you will be responsible for implementing the relevant company standards at Hinkley Point B.  This will include ensuring the correct controls are in place to minimise a) radiation does to workers and/ or b) radiological discharges.  In addition, you will be responsible for compliance reporting to regulators and:


  • Reporting of radiological protection issues and advice to the station Head of Radiological Protection and/or the Environmental Safety Group Head
  • Be able to link disparate information, understands trends and patterns, and turns these into ideas, frameworks or proposals which are consistent with the needs of the business
  • Take a timely approach and appropriate action, recognising/considering the implications of decisions, particularly relating to radiological safety and radioactive discharges
  • Develops and maintains effective relationships with both internal and external stakeholders

The Skills


 To be successful for this role, you’ll have a relevant HNC (or equivalent) – a relevant Degree may be advantageous or working towards qualifying. You should be able to demonstrate knowledge of statutory legislation relevant to nuclear power station operation, Site Licence requirements, Safety Case Management, Emergency Plan arrangements and working to high standards of nuclear, personal, environmental, radiological and industrial safety.


You should be able to demonstrate the following knowledge, skills and qualities:


  • The ability to make sound decisions and communicate those decisions with a view to improving nuclear safety and environmental and radiological safety in the workplace
  • The ability to pay attention to detail, applying a questioning attitude to verbal, numerical and written information
  • The ability to undertake work while applying the highest standards of safety in line with company and legislative requirements, identifying hazards associated with work activities and the working environment
  • Effective team values and influencing styles in achieving personal and team goals, able to build effective cross-functional relationships and team working at all levels.

Competitive Salary and Benefits


The salary range is between £36,175 - £77,677, with terms and conditions covered by the EDF Energy Nuclear Generation Company Agreement.  The starting salary for this appointment will be dependent of your existing salary, competence, experience and qualifications.  You will receive 28 days annual holiday plus bank holidays, incremental and competency-based progression and a Company pension scheme.
