Onshore Wind Development Manager

EDF Renewables is seeking an Onshore Wind Farm Developer to be located within the Onshore Development Team.  


The role is regionally based in Wales and will be predominantly home based with regular travel.  


We are ideally looking for an experienced wind farm developer with a track record and experience within the onshore wind farm field, with particular focus on Wales.

Nature and Scope

EDF Renewables (“EDF R”) is a 50/50 JV between EDF Energy (“EDF E”) and EDF Energies Nouvelles (“EDF EN”) (together the “ Shareholders”). EDF ER has the task of delivering the Shareholders’ strategic renewable energy objectives in the UK. Hence, EDF R is responsible for developing, constructing, and operating the shareholders renewable assets in the UK.  EDF R currently operates 698MW (34 wind farms), and is in the process of constructing an additional 177MW of capacity. EDF R has developed and maintains a large portfolio of onshore wind projects with new sites still being identified, assessed and added to the portfolio.


The Development and Investment (D&I) function leads the EDF R renewable development (across all technologies) business in the UK.  The main responsibilities include (i) setting up and reviewing the business strategy, (ii) managing all onshore, offshore and other renewable projects through their full project life time including development to consent, delivery into operation and operational asset management, and (iii) leading M&A activities including acquisition, partnership and disposal of onshore projects.


The Onshore Development Team is responsible for all aspects of the early stage development, from initial site identification through to feasibility, landowner negotiations and gaining planning permission for our projects. This team has a wide range of skills and supports other teams within EDF R on construction, acquisition and other development related opportunities. We are seeking to expand our development portfolio in Wales and require support for existing early stage projects and the origination of new projects in Wales.


The Onshore Developer, reporting to the Development and Consents Manager, will be responsible for all aspects of developing onshore wind farm projects as well as other forms of renewable technologies  This will involve the origination of opportunities, landonwer negotations, environmental and planning work, stakeholder management and the management of development projects through the planning system . This will also involve supporting other units within the business in order to achieve successful project developments. 


Principal Accountabilities

  • Identify potential wind farm sites in conjunction with the EDF ER GIS specialist using set selection criteria and constraints
  • Evaluate potential wind farm sites offered  by third parties
  • Maintain and establish relationships with land agents
  • Negotiation of land options and leases with land owners and their agents in conjunction with EDF ER legal
  • Prepare and manage the budgets associated with feasibility work carried out
  • Support EDF ER analytics team to assess  project economics and compliance with the EDF ER business plan
  • Prepare scope of services for external specialist consultants
  • Manage third party consultants undertaking  the feasibility studies
  • Involvement  in relationships with stakeholders including the local community, statutory consultees, community groups, planning officer and local councils
  • Attend public exhibitions and meetings during the consenting phase
  • Undertake due diligence on projects EDF ER are evaluating or considering acquiring
  • Research areas of interest to EDF ER and produce reports detailing investigation findings

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience

Qualifications and Experience

  • Degree or equivalent qualified in a related discipline
  • Other appropriate experience or qualifications may be considered
  • A knowledge and understanding of wind farm feasibility
  • A broad understanding of the Town and Country planning process in the UK and Wales in particular
  • Experience in the renewable energy, electricity generation or planning sectors is a distinct advantage
  • Understanding of the renewable energy project development process
  • Knowledge of other sources of renewable generation 


Technical and Commercial Knowledge and Skills

  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills
  • A highly motivated individual with excellent team working skills


Also required:

  • Willing to work on projects throughout the UK  including short stays away from the office
  • A commitment to EDF R’s HSE policies and an understanding of HSE and CDM requirements.
