Applications are invited for the position of a System Health Engineer to work in the Engineering Department at Heysham 1 Power Station. Heysham 1 Power Station is based in the North West. It is one of our advanced gas-cooled reactor (AGR) nuclear power stations and is capable of generating 1200MW of electricity, the equivalent of supplying 1.5 million homes.


  • System Health Engineers are responsible for maintaining the equipment reliability of our plant and systems through proactive management of the maintenance catalogue, adopting a rigorous response to losses and monitoring and evaluation of system and component status.


The role will offer varied and challenging work on various equipment and apparatus. The successful applicant will be expected to manage and improve the performance and equipment reliability of large systems or programmes. As the owner of several plant systems or programmes, you will be required to work cross functionally with a number of teams in order to minimise plant losses through excellence in equipment reliability.

The Person

You will be required to:


  • Manage the routine or medium risk projects & tasks such as major plant overhaul or refurbishment.
  • Contribution to the team business plan and control of applicable budgets.
  • Safety case management for aligned systems.
  • Application of the required regulatory framework and quality systems applicable to aligned systems.
  • Identification and initiation of solutions to improve equipment reliability.
  • Providing cross functional support and acting as subject matter expert for your systems.
  • Identification and mitigation of risks associated with your systems.
  • Adopting a rigorous response to losses and critical plant equipment failure.
The Skills

The successful candidate:


  • Should have a good understanding of power plant equipment design and operation. On the job training and mentoring would be available to the successful candidate and therefore all levels of applicant experience will be considered.
  • You should be self-motivated with a realistic “can-do” attitude. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required as is the ability to build strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • As a minimum, applicants will have an HNC in an engineering discipline. Candidates with a relevant engineering degree may have an advantage.
