Operations Technical Support Engineer (Chemistry)

The Operations Technical Support Engineer is an important role within the Operations department at Heysham 2 power station. The role is required to understand, control & optimise the operational performance of the power station against our key business objective – safe, reliable and efficient generation. The engineers are required to develop & apply specialist knowledge in the areas of power station chemistry, materials / corrosion science, and process engineering, in order to achieve this objective. The Operations Technical Support Engineers report to the Operations Technical Support Group Head, who in turn reports directly to the Operations Manager.

The Person

 

As an Operations Technical Support Engineer, you will be responsible for:

 

  • Monitoring plant performance using a wide range of data sources and technology, to ensure optimum performance and that operational & safety risks are minimised.
  • Reviewing, evaluating and documenting chemistry data and taking the appropriate action to ensure that adverse trends are identified and corrected promptly to ensure compliance with station, regulatory and site operating licence requirements
  • Control plant performance to target conditions through establishing operational instruction and actions, for all phases of plant operation. Ensure design changes or plant testing activities are adequately controlled
  • Inform key operational decision making from a specialist perspective & provide conservative advice on safety issues.
  • Proactively assess tasks and operations, providing risk assessment, advice, contingency & mitigation, in accordance with relevant safety and technical legislation.
  • Work within teams & form key relationships with other departments / stakeholders
  • Develop both personal and team knowledge in specialist areas. Use training as a tool to engage the station in optimising performance. Providing operational documentation & advice to support safe, optimal plant operation
  • Carry out risk assessments and specify controls to ensure Chemical Safety programmes are enacted safely and in line with legislation, best practice and company governance requirements
  • Performing plant investigations, identifying new risks and anomalies and advocating these within the organisation
  • Informing design change to ensure it meets operational performance requirements
  • Maintaining accurate records of plant operating parameters
  • Inform operational decision making with a bias for safety
  • Providing support to Chemistry Support Technicians

The Skills

 

As a minimum, entrants will have a relevant HNC (or equivalent) in a Chemistry related subject.

 

An ability to demonstrate knowledge in the areas of material science / corrosion, analytical chemistry, power station chemistry and/or process/chemical engineering is required.

 

Applicants should have a track record of delivering performance improvement within a chemistry or other technical function. Candidates should also have a flexible approach and the ability to work well as part of a team. Equally important is a proactive approach with the enthusiasm, determination and the ability to improve the performance of Heysham 2 Power Station.

 

Experience in an Operational Chemistry and/or laboratory setting will be advantageous as well as a proven track record for problem solving and solution implementation.

 

Ideally, the successful applicant would have 3 year’s experience in power station chemistry however this is not prohibitive if a background in a scientific or engineering discipline can be demonstrated.

Competitive Salary & Benefits

 

The salary range is between £34,232 and £62,016, with terms and conditions covered by the EDF Energy Nuclear Generation Company Agreement.  The starting salary for this appointment will be dependent of your existing salary, competence, experience and qualifications.  You will receive 28 days annual holiday plus bank holidays, incremental and competency-based progression and a Company pension scheme.
