Solicitor - HPC & Nuclear Development

Vacancy Overview

The Legal function is a strategic function critical to developing and managing the business. It forms part of the Governance & Legal Affairs Directorate, which is one of the corporate commercial functions within EDF Energy. HPC & Nuclear Development are the business units for EDF Energy’s nuclear new build projects, in joint venture with CGN.

Nature and Scope

The Solicitor role within this area will assist the Head of Legal to provide a pro-active, preventive and commercially relevant legal service to the HPC & Nuclear Development business units. Based in London with travel to other EDF Energy premises within the UK, which will be required on a regular basis as required by the business. Travel within Europe will be required from time to time.

Principal Accountabilities

  • To provide a timely, preventative and commercially relevant legal advice to the Hinkley Point C and other Nuclear Development projects on a range of topics, including: management of joint-venture arrangements, arrangements with Government, project finance, corporate governance, regulatory compliance, real estate and development phase activities.
  • To review, draft and participate in the negotiation of contracts, leading the negotiation process where appropriate.
  • To support the effective operation of joint-venture Boards.
  • To develop and deliver training courses appropriate for the business and for other solicitors as required.
  • To undertake research, as directed, on future legislative changes that may impact the business.
  • To manage appointed external advisers.
  • Successful management of a broad range of legal matters for the HPC & Nuclear Development business units.
  • Close cooperation with HPC & Nuclear Development Project teams and wider EDF Energy legal function.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience

  • Qualified solicitor admitted in England and Wales.or equivalent
  • Relevant post qualification experience as a solicitor / associate / legal counsel / legal advisor etc
  • Experience of delivering a pro-active business focused service that anticipates risks and prevents problems.
  • In-house experience would be valuable, or other relevant experience having operated with a commercial and strategic focus.
  • Demonstrates solid, well-rounded legal knowledge and experience, preferably in the infrastructure/energy projects sector.
  • Commercial awareness.
  • Able to effectively communicate complex legal concepts to a range of audiences, both verbally and in writing.
  • Able to establish credibility within the HPC & Nuclear Development projects, including at executive level.
  • Able to work under pressure to meet deadlines and work on several projects concurrently.
  • Flexible approach with a willingness to develop knowledge and skills in different areas of law and provide support to other teams, as required.
  • Organised and methodical approach.
  • Able to use MS Word, MS Excel and MS PowerPoint to an intermediate level.
  • Confident communicator, able to present information to a range of audiences.
