Senior Legal Counsel - IT, IP & Data (Sizewell C)

Employment basis: The role is expected to be a full- time position however we are open to discussing a more flexible or part- time approach where possible.

Come and join our expanding Sizewell C (SZC) team and work on one of the most exciting and largest megaprojects in the UK, whilst being at the forefront of the UK’s climate change agenda and energy policy. Following on from the success of Hinkley Point C (HPC), the SZC Project is a nuclear new build project in Suffolk, which has obtained planning approval and Government financing support. The project has started construction and is now seeking private investment. When completed, it will provide dependable electricity to 6 million homes for 60 years, which along with renewables, will support Britain to achieve Net Zero by 2050.

We have a fantastic opportunity for a Senior Legal Counsel for IT, IP and Data. 

Our teams are set up to work flexibly, with a hybrid working approach between our offices and your home. We provide a full suite of IT equipment to ensure that our employees can work from home comfortably and effectively.


The Role

Are you a seasoned lawyer with a passion for infrastructure projects? At Sizewell C, our legal team is crucial in safeguarding our operations and ensuring compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements. Key Responsibilities:

Drafting and Negotiation: Draft, negotiate, and provide advice on a wide range of commercial and IT agreements, including services and supply agreements, framework agreements, software licences, development agreements, and data sharing agreements.

Intellectual Property Management: Advise on and negotiate intellectual property license agreements, including managing complex IP arrangements and ensuring the company’s IP is protected and compliant.

Data Protection: Provide expert legal advice on data protection laws, including UK GDPR, Data Protection Act 2018, and other relevant privacy legislation. Support the data protection function on impact assessments, breaches, and compliance with data subject rights.

AI and Cyber Legislation: Advise on AI and emerging technology strategies, ensuring compliance with relevant AI legislation and best practices. Provide guidance on cyber legislation and emerging cyber risk strategies.

Regulatory Compliance: Support the business in understanding and meeting regulatory compliance obligations, including UK GDPR, export controls, health & safety, environmental regulations, and nuclear licensing.

Governance and Funding: Manage and develop complex governance and funding arrangements involving multiple stakeholders, including shareholders, regulators, and government departments.

Cross-functional Collaboration: Work closely with internal stakeholders and external advisors to support the timely, efficient, and compliant delivery of the Sizewell C project. Engage with key stakeholders, including regulators and government departments.

Legal Research and Analysis: Conduct legal research to stay abreast of relevant legal developments and provide proactive advice to mitigate risks and capitalize on opportunities.

About You:

Qualifications: Qualified solicitor or barrister in England & Wales or an equivalent common law jurisdiction.


Post-qualification experience as a Commercial Technology Lawyer, with a strong background in IT, IP, and data privacy law. Experience in delivering infrastructure projects and operating in a nuclear environment is highly desirable.


Strong commercial acumen to identify risks and present balanced options.

Excellent analytical skills to interpret and convey complex legal concepts.

Exceptional communication, coaching, and presentation skills tailored to diverse audiences.

Proven negotiation skills with experience in managing complex arrangements with multiple stakeholders.

Ability to manage and deliver competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Strong relationship-building skills with internal and external stakeholders.

A flexible approach with a willingness to develop knowledge in different areas of law and support various teams.
