R&D Natural Hazards and Environment Industrial Placement 2023

A career that will deliver change. Together, we’ll help Britain achieve Net Zero.

Join our Natural Hazards and Environment Industrial Placement and you can make an immediate impact, powering the nation today, whilst helping to build a sustainable energy future for tomorrow.

“In the Natural Hazards and Marine Environment Team of EDF UKC R&D, we have been hosting industrial placement students for many years now and we see our IPs as valuable members of our team.  Our students have come from various universities and from different academic STEM backgrounds, that has definitely contributed in our multidisciplinary image.  The IPs are exposed to the R&D challenges in the areas of environment and natural hazards including meteorology, ocean sciences, marine biology, space weather and climate change and also have the opportunity to work with key stakeholders to underpin the operations of our current fleet of nuclear power stations, new build development projects as well as offering support to other types of renewable energy sites such as offshore wind farms – activities linked to our EDF mantra “Helping Britain Achieve Net Zero”. Furthermore, we train our IP placements so they can gain both technical and non-technical skills e.g. in statistics, coding, technical report writing, client liaising and presenting their work to different internal and external audiences.”

What is the Natural Hazards and Environment Industrial Placement Programme:

We’re recruiting for students to join our UK Research & Development (R&D) Centre for this 12-month Natural Hazards and Environment Programme Placement in South London.

Our EDF R&D UK Centre is an integral part of the EDF Group R&D international network.  The strategy of the centre is to lead research and development for EDF, creating value, preparing for future challenges and unlocking opportunities for the business.

During this placement, you’ll contribute to the R&D programme which underpins the lifetime extension of our current fleet of nuclear power plants.

Training, development and support for you:

This industrial placement will provide you with insight into the R&D challenges in the areas of environment and natural hazards including meteorology, ocean sciences, marine biology, space weather and climate change, gaining vital experience in how EDF applies research work to deliver solutions to the business units.

You’ll have the opportunity to work with key stakeholders to support the operations of our current fleet of nuclear power stations, our new build development projects, as well as offering support to renewable energy sites such as offshore wind farms.

You’ll build both technical and non-technical skills, learn about a variety of natural hazards and how they can impact energy infrastructure, and develop skills in statistics, coding and technical report writing.

Previous students have been involved in working on statistical analysis of natural hazards; liaising with clients; technical reporting; R-script development; and been given the opportunity to present their work to different internal and external audiences.

This industrial placement will provide you with a better understanding about how academic research work and skills obtained throughout an undergraduate degree can be used within a major company.  You will also gain important technical and report writing skills and have the chance to meet like-minded researchers within the EDF R&D UK Centre and practitioners from our various business units.
