Legal Counsel
The Opportunity
The work of the Corporate & Customers Legal Team is critical to the success of the Customers business and Corporate Functions, with the responsibilities which include:
- Retail: ensuring that the business supplies electricity and gas to domestic and SME customers in a commercially viable and compliant manner;
- Business Solutions: negotiating energy supply contracts to supply electricity and gas to large and medium industrial & commercial customers, and provide route to market services to EDFR and other renewable generators;
- Wholesale Markets: negotiating contracts for the optimisation of flexible and renewable generation assets and route to market services for third party suppliers;
- Net Zero Operations: supporting growth of integrated energy efficiency solutions (including solar panels, batteries, EV charge points, and heat pumps) to local authorities and Retail customers through other EDF Group companies (Pod Point, Contact Solar and CB Heating);
- Corporate: advising business on M&A activity, conducting due diligence and engaging external firms (where required), supporting on property matters;
- Supply Chain: supporting the Supply Chain function with negotiating high value and high risk contracts for procurement of all goods, services and systems required to support the Customers business and enable the Corporate functions to run (e.g. IT, HR systems, consultancy, field services and metering, etc);
- Compliance: supporting the business in understanding regulatory compliance obligations and demonstrating best practice in all aspects including GDPR, energy industry regulation, health & safety and environment, sanctions. Providing legal input and representation at external industry forums and in documented responses to regulators enquiries, managing internal and external regulatory investigations
- Governance: managing complex governance arrangements across EDF’s group of companies in the UK;
- Financing and Investment: supporting the business in implementing and managing funding for EDF’s group of companies in the UK, including associated governance requirements; and
- Litigation and debt recovery: leading on debt recovery from B2B and B2C customers and defending legal proceedings on behalf of the Customers business.

What You’ll Be Doing
You’ll be supporting the Customers business and Corporate Functions through:
- Providing timely, preventive and commercially relevant legal advice on contractual, transactional, statutory and regulatory issues.
- Working closely with Business Partners within the relevant areas of the business to understand their objectives and business drivers and to identify current and future legal requirements.
- Supporting the Heads of Legal and Legal Affairs Director in actively developing and managing relationships with board members, shareholders, affiliates and internal and external stakeholders.
- Providing high quality, effective and efficient legal advice on company law, corporate governance, and legal compliance activities, including working with the Company Secretarial team and Policy & Regulation in relation to company and energy industry compliance.
- Leading on reviewing and negotiating a range of complex energy industry matters, spanning energy supply contracts, power purchase agreements, trading agreements, and providing guidance on energy industry regulation. Demonstrating competence in negotiating various commercial and corporate contracts, including corporate transaction documentation and goods and services procurement, identifying and where practical, mitigating key risks across the EDF Customers Business and Corporate Functions.
- Supporting submission of bids, tender reviews and negotiation of contract terms in relation energy and energy service sales contracts within the Customers areas.
- Providing high quality, effective and efficient legal advice on regulatory and legal compliance activities, including working with the Policy & Regulation team in relation to energy industry compliance. Be informed of latest developments in legislation and regulation affecting Retail, Energy Business Solutions (EBS) and Wholesale Markets Solutions (WMS).
- Advising the business on any required changes to tariff terms, marketing communications, business process and referral arrangements in relation to energy contracts with our residential and business customers to ensure ongoing compliance with energy supply licence and consumer law.
Who You Are
You're a qualified solicitor admitted in England and Wales, equipped with relevant post qualification experience.
You’re experienced in dealing with energy industry matters including energy supply contracts (and related queries), power purchase agreements, alongside advising on energy industry regulation.
You have a good level of competence and experience in dealing with and negotiating a variety commercial and corporate contracts, such as:
- partnerships and collaborations;
- various corporate transaction documentation (relevant to mergers, acquisitions, disposals, restructurings and financing arrangements); and
- goods and services.
You enjoy developing relationships with key stakeholders and display professionalism in everything you do.
