A key aspect of your role will involve consolidating financial results and plans for the Customers business, including the production of Medium-Term Plans (MTP) and quarterly reforecasts for corporate reporting and the regulator Ofgem. Using Anaplan, you'll ensure the quality and consistency of forecasts and budgets across income statements, cash flow, and balance sheets.

Vince Nowell, Business Performance Senior Analyst, says “Working in the reporting team really does give you that overview of the company’s activities and performance that you just don’t get in other areas of Finance. You will build an extensive network while working closely with the wider Customers Finance team, from the Graduate scheme employees all the way to the FD. It is a challenging role that enables you to contribute to many key deliverables, both internal and external.”

What you’ll be doing

As part of month-end activities, you'll handle consolidation tasks for Group reporting, such as journal postings and reconciling balance sheet movements with income and cash flow changes. You'll collaborate closely with the Group Reporting team to discuss monthly financial results.

You'll serve as a primary contact for updates to the chart of accounts and cost centre structures, maintaining hierarchy mappings within the Anaplan reporting tool for streamlined operations. You'll also be responsible for producing quarterly Ofgem forecasts, projecting financial statements over three years based on various energy cost scenarios provided by the industry regulator, with a focus on cash liquidity.

Additionally, you'll generate the annual Ofgem Segmental reports, showcasing EBIT by Domestic and Non-domestic channels to provide insights into business performance.

At times, you may assist in updating the annual goodwill impairment model for the valuation of the Customers Business Unit, involving inputting budget data and long-term volume and commodity prices.

Moreover, you'll lend support to finance teams on technical accounting queries, sharing updates on group policies and accounting standards to maintain consistency across the business, with assistance available from a dedicated technical team within the group.

It's about more than just crunching numbers; it's about anticipating questions, recognizing areas of significance, and meeting stakeholder requirements. This entails weaving together analysis provided by various business teams to craft coherent narratives and consistent messages throughout.

Moreover, possessing an accounting qualification (ACA/CIMA/ACCA) is essential, but it's not just about ticking boxes. You should feel at home navigating through financial statements—be it the Income Statement, Balance Sheet, or Cashflow. Beyond qualifications, industry experience is highly valued, coupled with a demonstrable proficiency in financial systems and a knack for robust analysis.

You’ll have a high level of accountability and attention to detail, coupled with resilience to navigate through challenges. Effective communication skills are paramount, as is the ability to adapt and contribute to team dynamics and operational standards set by the Customer Finance charter.

Navigating the role comes with its own set of challenges. You’ll utilize tools like the Anaplan reporting and forecasting tool for forecasting and group activities. Additionally, there's an ongoing need to challenge existing methodologies, constantly seeking out efficiencies and managing competing priorities while navigating time constraints. It's a dynamic environment that demands both adaptability and innovation.
