Carbon Lead (Sizewell C)

Employment basis: The role is expected to be a full- time position however we are open to discussing a flexible approach if required.

Salary: £70,000 - £100,000 dependent on experience, plus bonus and other benefits.

The Opportunity

Come and join our expanding Sizewell C (SZC) team and work on one of the most exciting and largest megaprojects in the UK, whilst being at the forefront of the UK’s climate change agenda and energy policy. Following on from the success of Hinkley Point C (HPC), the SZC Project is a nuclear new build project in Suffolk, which has obtained planning approval and Government financing support. The project has started construction and is now seeking private investment. When completed, it will provide dependable electricity to 6 million homes for 60 years, which along with renewables, will support Britain to achieve Net Zero by 2050.

 

We have a fantastic opportunity for a Carbon Lead

The Role

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Carbon Lead to join the Sizewell C project. The successful candidate will be responsible for owning SZC’s carbon baseline and reduction targets.  They will lead SZC’s carbon reporting strategy (in alignment with the project’s PAS2080:2023-certified CMS and ensure the project meets its construction-phase goals, whilst contributing meaningfully to the UK’s net-zero targets. This is a unique opportunity to play a pivotal role in one of the UK’s most significant energy projects.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Strategic Leadership: Develop, implement, and manage Sizewell C’s carbon reduction strategy, ensuring alignment with the UK’s broader net-zero objectives.
  • Carbon Accounting: Oversee the calculation, reporting, and verification of the project’s carbon footprint, ensuring accuracy and compliance with relevant standards and regulations.
  • Innovation and Best Practices: Identify and implement innovative approaches to minimize carbon emissions throughout the project lifecycle, from design and construction to operation.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Work closely with internal teams, contractors, regulators, and external stakeholders to promote and achieve carbon reduction goals.
  • Policy Compliance: Ensure the project’s carbon management activities comply with all relevant national and international environmental policies and regulations.
  • Reporting and Communication: Regularly report on carbon performance to senior management and stakeholders, providing clear and actionable insights.
  • Team Leadership: Lead and mentor a team of carbon and sustainability specialists, fostering a culture of environmental responsibility and continuous improvement.

Knowledge & Skills

 

Essential

  • Experience developing project wide carbon or energy strategies in a large-scale infrastructure environment
  • Experience using One Click LCA, eToolLCD to build complex carbon models
  • In depth knowledge of relevant standards and regulations (such as PAS 2080:2023; RICS WLCA; TCFD)
  • Commercial awareness
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Strong analytical skills, including the ability to generate reports, carry out complex and accurate data analysis, produce presentation materials
  • Experience managing suppliers
  • Comfortable working independently and flexibly
  • Carbon accounting experience
  • Excellent communication skills

 

Desirable

  • Experience of TCFD reporting
  • Climate change scenario modelling experience

 

Qualifications & Experience

 

Essential

  • Degree in Environmental, Chemical, Mechanical or Civil Engineering, Climate Sciences or equivalent experience

 

Desirable

  • Professional body membership or accreditation
