The Opportunity

The UK electricity market is changing at pace, as the country moves towards a zero-carbon energy system and relies more and more on flexible and intermittent generation. EDF must continuously improve our tooling in order to thrive in this market and support this zero-carbon transition.

We are looking for a passionate Back-end Python Developer to join our extraordinary engineers in a team that provide technical expertise to Wholesale Markets Optimisation, particularly our busy 24 x 7 Shift Trading Team. You will be supported by a team of senior developers, evaluating sprint performance globally as a team and joining a company that values and takes care of you.

It's not just passion about technology we look for, in this role, you will directly contribute towards EDF's ambition of helping Britain achieve Net Zero...How? The team are responsible for our PowerShift Battery Optimisation Model. Our traders use this to schedule our portfolio of battery assets. By using batteries, EDF helps to decarbonise the UK's electricity generation. Allowing us to charge the batteries when there is plenty of cheap renewable energy and then discharge them when electricity demand is higher. This means, we can reduce the number of fossil fuelled power stations in the UK!

Our teams are set up to work flexibly, therefore you don’t have to live in London and due to the nature of the work, you are free to work at the time of day that suits you. As long as you’re happy to travel once a month to collaborate with your team, you can be based anywhere in the UK.

The Role & Skills

As a Software Engineer in WMO, you will work in a team delivering software features in line with business priorities as well as providing operational IT support activities for the software created. Python or .NET backend skills will really complement the skills in the rest of the team. If you have experience in these areas, we'd love to speak to you. Front-end experience would be a bonus, but not essential.

Our engineering practise is cloud native for new deliveries, but we also have a responsibility to maintain and re-build some legacy applications. Our core platform centres around AWS, and we operate using a landing zone model where each product team is vended a set of AWS accounts to own, manage and operate within - essentially self-contained.

Our solutions are ideally serverless based, but will consider containerisation when required.

In this fast paced team, you will get exposure to a variety of technologies. Hannah Loebl  - Senior Manager, WMO Software Engineering says “We’re moving all of our Shift Trading Tools onto AWS, using Serverless Architecture, ensuring the tools are robust, performant and really easy to use.  Allowing us to take away manual processes from the traders, freeing up their time to improve their trading strategies.  We use a combination of Python, .NET and React to build our tools.”

Competitive Salary & Benefits

At EDF we’re dedicated to offering flexible benefits that support our people across all aspects of their lives. We’re delighted to offer a range of benefits to support our employees’ physical, emotional and financial wellbeing.

In addition to a competitive starting salary and excellent benefits, we offer a market-leading company pension scheme, paid holidays and a range of flexible benefits, such as: a company incentive bonus plan, health cover, cycle to work scheme, gym membership, discounts and employee pricing.

Please let us know if you’d like to discuss flexible working arrangements by highlighting this on your application.
