We have an exciting opportunity for you to join us as our next Welding Engineer to join our dynamic team at Nuclear Services, particularly within the Structural Integrity Function. In Nuclear Services, we're at the forefront of providing technical expertise to support crucial projects like new nuclear builds, operating stations, and decommissioning sites.

 

In this role, your focus will be on the prestigious Hinkley Point C (HPC) project, with future involvement in the exciting Sizewell C (SZC) venture. Within Structural Integrity Function, your role will be pivotal in ensuring that the Safety Case requirements are meticulously adhered to throughout various project phases, from design to operational stages. At our Gloucester Business Park hub, you'll collaborate closely with other branches, forming a robust team aimed at maintaining the highest safety standards and technical excellence.

What you’ll be doing…

 

In this role, you'll be reporting directly to the Welding Group Leader, ensuring smooth coordination and communication within the team. Your primary responsibility will involve providing crucial support for the development of Safety Cases for upcoming nuclear construction projects, particularly focusing on the intricate domain of materials and welding.

 

Additionally, you'll play a pivotal role in supporting the implementation and analysis of data derived from extensive fracture toughness testing programs, encompassing forged components, castings, and welds of High Integrity Components. Other responsibilities also include:

 

  • Provide expert technical guidance on Materials and Welding to resolve design and safety case issues for the UK's fleet of European Pressurised Reactors (EPR), ensuring the highest quality standards.
  • Support the EPR procurement strategy during the construction phase by reviewing and accepting Contractors' manufacturing and welding documentation, fulfilling the Intelligent Customer role.
  • Manage technical aspects of non-conformances and design changes for specific systems, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Foster strong relationships with Project, NS-SIF, and Responsible Designer Engineering teams, as well as regulatory bodies, in all matters related to Materials and Welding.
  • Coordinate external support organisations to ensure comprehensive coverage of Materials and Welding expertise.
  • Drive the resolution of commitments outlined in the Generic Design Assessment (GDA) for Materials and Welding.
  • Take on responsibilities for Technical Leadership, Health and Safety, Work Planning, Succession Management, Quality Assurance, Financial Management, and skill development in alignment with Group Lead objectives.
  • Assist the Group Lead in strategic planning, resource allocation, process optimisation, budget management, and overall activities pertaining to Materials and Welding.
  • Exemplify the core values of the HPC Project, fostering their adoption among team members and throughout the broader Project community.

 

Who you are…

 

To be suitable for this role, we’re looking for you to hold a high-quality degree in materials science, engineering, or welding engineering, with a solid understanding of steel metallurgy. Additionally, we’re looking for you to have previous industrial experience in relevant sectors such as nuclear, manufacturing, oil and gas, power generation, or welding engineering consultancy which would be advantageous however, not essential.

 

Other requirements for this role include:

 

  • Familiarity with mechanical characterisation and testing of materials, including material qualification and acceptance testing.
  • Knowledge of Fracture Toughness Testing methods and proficiency in data analysis.
  • Understanding of corrosion mechanisms, particularly stress and flow-assisted corrosion, relevant to light water reactors.
  • Demonstrated proactive and self-motivated approach to both technical and non-technical tasks.
  • Strong time management, planning, and organisational skills.
  • Excellent technical writing and communication abilities.
  • Experience conducting audits of the supply chain to ISO-3834 standards.
