The Opportunity

EDF has a number of opportunities for Safety Case Engineers across all of our licensees. These include roles within our Nuclear Generation business, supporting our generating and defueling power stations, as well as our Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C businesses, where we’re building a new generation of nuclear power stations.

Are you someone who takes personal ownership and accountability for the work you do? Are you passionate about solving complex problems and driving pragmatic solutions? Are you a proactive self-starter with a questioning attitude? Are you known for your eye for detail? Are you are looking for a career which is rewarding, at the cutting edge of project development and where you can really make a difference?

Why not join our Nuclear Generation team and support the continued safe generation at our existing PWR and AGR fleet of power stations?  You’ll be working to support a 24-7 operation and helping to maintain these vital UK assets for carbon free electricity generation and then into the defueling phase.  Projects are centred on safety cases to optimise and maximise operating lives, driving towards Net Zero.  Defueling safety cases present new challenges and the biggest step change in AGR operation for over 30 years.

Alternatively, do you want to support the development of a new modern standard safety case for the first new build UK Nuclear Power Station in decades? Then come and join either of our expanding Hinkley Point C (HPC) or Sizewell C (SZC) teams. Be a part of one of the world largest and most exciting projects, whilst being at the forefront of the UK’s climate change agenda and energy policy. When completed, each of these projects will provide dependable electricity to 6 million homes over 60 years which, along with renewables, will drive Britain towards achieving Net Zero by 2050.

The Role

The Design Authority (DA), as part of the licensee organisation, is responsible for developing the nuclear safety case and maintaining its integrity throughout the full lifecycle of the nuclear power plant.

As an experienced Safety Case Engineer working in a new build Design Authority (HPC or SZC), you will play an important role in the development and maintenance of the safety case. You will provide technical leadership in resolving challenging issues to support the construction, commissioning and the safe operation of the Nuclear Power Plant. You will have opportunities to gain experience and work in a variety of different aspects of the safety case from developing the main Safety Report through to safety justifications to support modifications. In your role you will be supported by and need to engage with a variety of disciplines within the wider organisation (Nuclear Analysis, Pressurised Water Reactor Technology, Construction, Commissioning and Operations), while also working with OEM designers/suppliers and internal/external regulators.

In our Nuclear Generation business safety case engineers are responsible for maintenance of the safety cases supporting normal operations and fault scenarios during the generation and defueling phases of operation. You will provide technical leadership to define and deliver safety case requirements to ensure compliance within a regulated environment. You will have opportunities to develop skills across a wide range of technical and plant engineering  disciplines, through completion of planned work and providing support to address emergent challenges.
