The Opportunity

#WeAreEDF and are leading the transition to a cleaner, low emission electric future, tackling climate change and helping Britain achieve net zero.

One of the key capabilities required to support the new nuclear build projects, operations and decommissioning is a thorough demonstrable and sustainable technical understanding of the plant, its systems and the associated safety case.  The skills and knowledge required to maintain this capability can be scarce, take a long time to develop, and are currently attributed to each Licensee individually.

In order to ensure this critical capability is maintained and developed a Technical Services Organisation (TSO) has been implemented. The TSO, in combination with the new Design Authorities of the Licensees, will form the Technical Client Organisation (TCO); a platform for collaboration driving a common approach and replication where appropriate. Longer term the vision is to create an organisation that will ultimately bring together all the required “Technical” support resources in EDF’s UK nuclear business units to enable EDF related duty holders to comply with all conditions inherent in the UK’s regulatory framework for nuclear safety, security and environmental protection.

We now have a fantastic opportunity for a Safety Case Officer to join the Safety Case Integrity Group (SCIG) within the TCO, with the main purpose of reporting and resolving safety case related issues on the Hinkley Point C (HPC) project. This will involve spending time on site ensuring governance is efficient whilst maintaining strong nuclear safety and integrity.

The focus for the SCIG for the next phase of the project will be the large number of Non-Conformance Reports on site and Manufacturing Non-Conformance Reports coming into the Quality Management department (QM). As the Safety Case Officer, you will need to develop and maintain a working relationship with the site/QM group with routine communications and timely action to oversee, identify and resolve safety case issues.

The Role

As the Safety Case Officer, you will not only need to have a good understanding of safety implication to the nuclear sector, but also be an excellent communicator. Being based between the office location and HPC, you will utilise your experience as a technical leader in order to act as an interface across multiple disciplines and management levels.

You will be accountable for:

•    Performing surveillance of the nuclear safety categorisations carried out by designers, site and QM
•    Identifying issues with quality or consistency of categorisation, and providing guidance and feedback
•    Providing Design Authority advice on matters related to Nuclear Safety
•    Setting the strategy and providing advice on Safety Case production
•    Delivering modification related Safety Case training for the project and supporting the development of Safety Case Capability within TCO

The Skills

To be successful in the role, you will be able to demonstrate the following skills and experience:

•    Understanding of the UK nuclear safety culture and practice
•    Track record of technical leadership to resolve issues and ability to efficiently interface and communicate across multiple technical disciplines, management levels and cultures
•    Ability to develop safety strategy and manage complex safety cases
•    Ability to prioritize tasks and identify issues with potential significant impacts
•    Flexibility, adaptability, autonomy and a strong questioning attitude
•    Focus on quality and delivery
