The Opportunity

 

Our exciting Sizewell C (SZC) project – a proposed new nuclear power station to be built on the Suffolk coast - would provide dependable electricity to 6 million homes for 60 years which, along with renewables, will support Britain’s Net Zero aim by 2050. 


As Safety Case Engineer (Hazards), you’ll help ensure nuclear safety and maintain design integrity as an intelligent customer within the Safety Case Branch of SZC.
 

The Role

 

You’ll produce safety case documentation as part of SZC’s Design Authority, particularly aspects related to internal and external hazards. You’ll also support the development of processes for managing the safety case and its configuration control.


Specifically, you’ll be accountable for:

 

 

  • Understanding the safety case related to internal and external hazards
  • Producing and reviewing design hazard assessments
  • Developing and reviewing strategies and methodologies for managing and assessing risks from various hazards
  • Understanding the general provisions for protection from hazards
  • Understanding how hazards are assessed probabilistically
  • Supporting the development of processes for safety case management, modification control and configuration control
  • Managing the production and development of sections of the site- specific safety case
  • Supporting changes to the safety case
  • Providing safety case input to non-conformances and design changes for specified systems
  • Working effectively and maintain a strong relationship with EDF Engineering and Regulatory bodies
  • Co-ordinating support from other external organisations
  • Interfacing with the regulator in the areas of safety case management and the hazards safety case
     

 

 

The Skills

 

To be successful in this role you’ll be able to demonstrate: 

 

 

  • Degree or equivalent in physical science, maths or engineering
  • Experience in a safety related, regulated environment (i.e. nuclear, oil & gas, aviation, etc) 
  • Demonstrable evidence of complex safety case management/ production (ideally in the nuclear industry), with an emphasis on hazards safety cases
  • Ability to operate autonomously or as part of a team
  • Decision making capability for resolution of safety case issues
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to build strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders


Desirable:

 

  • Chartered engineer status
