Principal Solicitor - Generation

Vacancy Overview

The Principal Solicitor within the Generation Legal team will be expected to work collaboratively with a fellow Principal Solicitor within the team to deliver a pro-active, preventative and commercially relevant legal service to the Generation business unit. Specifically they will be leading on complex, high profile matters to help the company to achieve its ambitions.

The role will require the Principal Solicitor to manage a team of professional Solicitors within the Generation Legal Team. It will also require the Principal Solicitor to respond to requests for support from the business and to identify/co-ordinate/support delivery of legal training and coaching.

Nature and Scope

The Principal Solicitor is expected to work with a fellow Principal Solicitor to support the Legal Affairs Director in delivering their role and their accountability for the legal and corporate affairs of the Generation business unit, including providing advice / support on key significant projects for the Generation business

They would be required to deputise for the Legal Affairs Director as required. 

Principal Accountabilities

  • Report directly to the Legal Affairs Director. They will work with the other Principal Solicitor and Legal Affairs Director to ensure the Generation Legal Team provides legal support to the Generation business on all matters;
  • In conjunction with the other Principal Solicitor, has the autonomy to make decisions on and provide legal advice and support to the business on complex contractual, regulatory and statutory matters.  The Principal Solicitor will, in conjunction with the other Principal Solicitor escalate and ensure the Legal Affairs Director is informed of all significant strategic, regulatory and project issues and matters with Executive involvement;
  • Work co-operatively with the other Principal Solicitor in taking primary responsibility for key senior business relationships, working with senior business partners within identified areas of the business to develop a constructive partnership, understand their objectives, support in the identification and the mitigation of risks and to support in the identification and/or interpretation of current and future legal requirements.   They will be responsible for leading key strategic projects at the request of the Legal Affairs Director and leading the review, drafting and negotiation of contracts which are significant to the business in terms of value, complexity and/or potential liability;
  • In conjunction with the other Principal Solicitor, deputise for the Legal Affairs Director and be the principal point of contact for the rest of the business in his / her absence, including attending meetings and ensuring meetings are documented and the outcomes clearly communicated;
  • Interface with both central support functions and the business. They will work co-operatively with the other Principal Solicitor in attending relevant project, committee or working group meetings with leads in the business and to represent the company with key external stakeholders where appropriate, ensuring the Generation Legal Team are appraised of the content/outcome of such engagements;
  • Have line management responsibility (including objectives, Performance Management, development, coaching and the organisation and distribution of workload) for a team of Solicitors and will ensure that adequate legal resource is available from the Generation Legal Team to support the business on any matter where appropriate;
  • In conjunction with their fellow Principal Solicitor, will also ensure that the Generation Legal Team is kept informed of any significant matter, so as to be able to provide effective and efficient legal advice to the business;
  • Work collaboratively with other parts of EDF Energy and EDF Group to ensure best practice is identified and shared across the EDF business, using opportunities external or internal to highlight and share such best practices. The Principal Solicitor will  be responsible for regularly engaging with and supporting senior business partner governance responsibilities; robustly driving forward appropriate improvements in legal standards and business protections; identifying development needs and providing training to enhance business partner legal understanding; and
  • Work co-operatively with the other Principal Solicitor in being responsible for managing and promoting good relationships with external law firms, in the best interests of the Generation business. They will also support in managing fees quoted and charged for external instructions. 

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience

  • Qualified solicitor admitted in England and Wales or Scotland or equivalent.
  • Significant post qualification experience as a solicitor, in-depth knowledge of the Energy sector and ideally construction law experience (contentious or non-contentious). 
  • Detailed understanding of the energy industry and key legal risks/requirements of generation assets such as coal fired power stations, CCGT, gas storage facilities, renewables and nuclear power stations.
  • Understanding of key corporate risk areas such as competition law, data protection and also nuclear specific challenges such as nuclear liability.
  • Experience of delivering a pro-active business focused service that identifies and mitigates risk.
  • Strong commercial acumen that can identify risk, risk mitigations and prevent suitable options to the business balancing risk and reward.
  • Line Management experience, including coaching, guidance, prioritisation, planning and organising workloads.
  • Strong coaching and presentation skills, with the ability to tailor the communications style to suit a variety of audiences, including the ability to communicate complex legal concepts to a range of audiences both verbally and in writing.
  • Able to establish credibility and build relationships within business and external bodies.
  • Able to work under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build relationships with team members and key stakeholders – engaging, managing and influencing where required.
  • A strong team player and leader with experience of leading a team on significant projects.
  • Flexible approach with a willingness to develop knowledge and skills in different areas of law.
  • Able to use MS Word, MS Excel and MS PowerPoint to an intermediate level.
