Vacancy Overview

EDF are recruiting a trainee Occupational Physician. The Occupational Medicine training programme is a four-year programme offered on a fixed term contract, starting at ST3. During this time, the trainee's work will be monitored for satisfactory progress and subject to annual reviews in the form of Annual Reviews of Competency Progression (ARCPs). Progression on the programme will be dependent upon these reviews.

The posts on this rotation will have been approved for Specialist Training by the Faculty of Occupational Medicine of the Royal College of Physicians of London. The post will attract an industrial National Training Number and provide training towards a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) The Postgraduate Dean via the national school of occupational health will have confirmed that this post has the necessary educational and staffing approvals.

The programme is based in Gloucester but there will be opportunities to travel to a number of different sites to gain experience across EDF Energy. In addition there may be opportunities to undertake short secondments with other Occupational Health providers.

Nature and Scope

A four year StR training post in Occupational Medicine at EDF Energy.

Principal Accountabilities


You will be involved in work health assessments/examinations, sickness absence assessments, health surveillance/monitoring and medical retirements. You will be expected to give advice to Management and take increasing responsibilities within the service as they gain experience. You will also be expected to carry out workplace visits and become fully conversant with all components of Occupation Health. It may be possible for secondments / rotations to be organised to other Occupational Health settings where it will benefit the post holder and does not conflict with the needs of EDF Energy. The trainee will be expected to take part in the audit and clinical governance meetings and attend relevant committees such as Control of Infection Committee, Health and Safety Committees connected , Ionising Radiation Committee, Employee Well-Being Committee with EDF energy

You will be encouraged to take part in research and must participate in audit. During the first year a weekly session will be held with the supervising Consultant. The training will continue over the next three years with supervision and support as appropriate.  When necessary tutorials will be arranged with other specialties in order for the post holder to gain relevant experience. During the last year of the appointment the post holder will be given managerial training and assume some management responsibility in one of the units.

The trainee will be expected to maintain E portfolio of experience and the progress of the trainee will be reviewed every six months within EDF in addition to the formal yearly reviews conducted by the occupational Medicine Specialist Training Committee (the ARCP process).

This role will require travel to a number of EDF Energy sites. 

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience

Applicants must:


  • Be eligible for full registration with, and hold a current licence to practice from the GMC at intended start date.
  • Have evidence of achievement of foundation competences from a UKFPO-affiliated foundation program or equivalent, by time of application in line with GMC standards/Good Medical Practice.
  • Be eligible to undertake training in Occupational Medicine as defined by the Faculty of Ocupational Medicine.
