Metallurgists and Corrosion / Asset Integrity Engineers

Gloucester Business Park. Hybrid, flexible home and office working supported.

Are you ready to tackle the challenges of materials and corrosion in the nuclear industry? Do you have the expertise to ensure the safety and integrity of critical systems?

Then we want to hear from you!

The Opportunity…

We are looking for highly motivated and enthusiastic Metallurgists and Corrosion / Asset Integrity Engineers to join us as part of our Nuclear Services business. Nuclear Services is our technical centre of excellence, supporting our existing fleet of nuclear power stations and our nuclear new build projects.

In your role, you will be taking a lead role in supporting inspection, assessment, manufacturing and repair / replacement activities to help underpin safety cases and proactively manage in-service degradation of systems and components on our nuclear power stations.

Pay, benefits and culture…

We can offer a competitive salary from £44,112 - £92,778 (dependent on experience) and you’ll be appointed based on the parameters outlined in the Nuclear Company Agreements as well as your existing salary, competence, experience and qualifications. This is a full-time position; however we will be happy to discuss options regarding part-time flexibility and job share if you would like to highlight this on your application.

Alongside your salary and a market-leading pension scheme, your package will include a range of benefits, from the big and formal to the small and personal.

We’re talking about everything from enhanced parental leave to electric vehicle leasing, health insurance to product discounts, critical illness insurance to technology vouchers, gym membership to season ticket loans.

Here, we do right by each other and everyone’s welcome. We’d like our future workforce to have an equal gender balance, represent a broad mix of people from minority ethnic backgrounds, LGBTQ+, those with a disability and supporting social mobility.

We’re a disability confident employer and we’ll do all we can to help with your application. Please let us know if you need to request reasonable adjustments.

We take pride in fostering a dynamic and inclusive environment, where the diverse backgrounds and experiences of our employees drive fresh thinking and innovation. We understand that success means different things to different people. That’s why we support you to pursue a career that’s unique to you. Because success is personal.

What you’ll be doing…

Working in Materials Group within the Structural Integrity Function, you’ll lead efforts in inspection, assessment, manufacturing, and repair / replacement activities to support safety cases and manage the in-service degradation of systems and components at our nuclear power stations. Some work will take place at power station sites or supplier facilities.

Depending on your particular skills set, the role will include some combination of the following:

Metallurgists:

  • Providing practical engineering metallurgy advice to resolve materials-related challenges, including conducting metallurgical investigations and evaluating materials equivalency and obsolescence issues for our older power stations.
  • Providing recommendations on materials properties, specifications, manufacturing issues and in-service performance in support of structural integrity assessments and safety cases.

Corrosion / Asset Integrity Engineers:

  • Providing specialist technical advice on corrosion mechanisms and data to inform materials selection and performance assessments, plant safety cases and asset management strategies.
  • Performing fitness-for-service assessments for corrosion defects and advising on corrosion-related repair / replacement solutions and corrosion protection / prevention measures (particularly industrial coatings).
  • Providing central oversight of fleet corrosion management programmes, developing consistent standards for inspection regimes and defect sentencing, monitoring trends in corrosion defects and remediation, and promoting best practice tools and techniques for corrosion management.

Who you are…

Your background may include some of the following:

  • Minimum HNC (or equivalent) in Materials, Metallurgy, or Corrosion Engineering.
  • Proven experience solving materials or corrosion-related problems in an operational or production-focused industrial environment.
  • Ability to make risk-informed decisions considering safety and commercial factors.
  • Strong relationship-building skills with operational customers and suppliers.
  • A questioning attitude to ensure work meets safety and quality standards.
  • Excellent communication skills, and the ability to write high-quality technical reports.
  • Experience at large-scale facilities (e.g., nuclear, conventional, renewable generators, or petrochemical plants) is beneficial, noting that this is not an R&D role.

Metallurgists: You should have a strong understanding of ferrous metallurgy, including material properties and degradation mechanisms relevant to power plant systems. Experience with corrosion mechanisms and the ability to work closely with the Corrosion/Asset Integrity team are beneficial.

Corrosion/Asset Integrity Engineers: You should have expertise in corrosion mechanisms, assessment techniques, and data sources for power plant systems. Familiarity with corrosion management best practices, asset integrity strategies, and inspection planning is essential. Experience with industrial coating standards is a plus.

Closing Date: 11th February 2025
