We’re looking for a talented and self-starting solicitor to join our team providing legal advice to the Generation division of EDF in the UK. As a Legal Counsel you will have a broad range of responsibilities, but specialist experience in projects, commercial law and the energy sector will provide a distinct advantage. You will be confident collaborating with the complete range of seniority across the business and experienced in planning and managing complex legal matters simultaneously with responsive, succinct and pragmatic day-to-day advice. In this role you will gain unique exposure to a sector-leading business alongside an accomplished legal team.

Day to Day:

  • You will provide timely, risk informed, preventative and commercially relevant legal advice to the business on a broad range of matters including key commercial, projects, construction / deconstruction and property contracts, general advice on planning or regulatory matters, organisational governance and compliance requirements and the avoidance and/or management of disputes.
  • Under appropriate supervision, you will draft, negotiate and provide advice on the management of key contracts required by the business.
  • Support the applicable business unit in proactively identifying potential disputes or claims, avoiding such disputes or claims and successfully managing any formal dispute.
  • Be aware of legislative changes that may impact the business and share the same across the legal team and business as appropriate, including through delivery of training courses.
  • Manage particular matters for the business unit, including the appointment and instruction of external law firms where required.
  • Work closely with Business Partners within the Generation business to understand their objectives and business drivers and to identify current and future legal requirements.

The Person

What does being a great Legal Counsel at EDF mean?

  • Communicative: Excellent communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex legal concepts to a range of audiences, both verbally and in writing.
  • Collaborative: Building, maintaining as well as developing strong relationships with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Flexible: Flexible approach with a willingness to develop knowledge and skills in different areas of law and provide support to other teams, as required.
  • Passionate: A strong passion for law with the eagerness to really make a difference.
  • Self-motivated: Able to work both independently, planning and managing matters in accordance with the business’s timing requirements and under the supervision of a more senior lawyer where required.
  • Organised: Able to work both independently, planning and managing matters in accordance with the business’s timing requirements and your own capacity.
  • Commercially astute: Interest in delivering a pro-active, business focused service that anticipates risks and prevents commercial impacts.
  • Attention to detail: Able to demonstrate both attention to detail and the ability to provide highly pragmatic legal advice in the context of an established, commercial, operational business.

The Skills

You will need to:

  • Have relevant post qualification experience as a solicitor admitted in England and Wales (Guideline 5+ PQE but demonstrable capability in the areas below is the factor being measured).
  • Possess (appropriate to the level of PQE) solid, well rounded legal knowledge and drafting skills in commercial, contractual and / or regulatory law.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and experience in the energy sector or analogies fields and also displays commercial acumen.
  • Able to use MS Word, MS Excel and MS PowerPoint to an intermediate level.
