Human Factors Industrial Placement 2022

A career that will deliver change. Together, we can help Britain achieve net zero.

Join our Human Factors Industrial Placement and you can make an immediate impact, powering the nation today, whilst helping to build a sustainable energy future for tomorrow.

“In the Human Factors team we’re working on the nuclear new build at Hinkley Point C, modifications to our fleet of generating AGRs and employing our skills in new ways to respond to the challenges of de-fuelling”

Anna Ellis, Human Factors Branch Manager

The Human Factors Industrial Placement Programme:

We’re recruiting for students to join our 12-month placement within the Human Factors Branch of our Technical Client Organisation (TCO).

TCO is EDF’s centre of technical expertise, designed to help maintain and develop our unique nuclear capability, as some of our existing power stations head into decommissioning, whilst Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C progress towards generating energy.

Human Factors is key to supporting the new nuclear build projects, operations and decommissioning.  Within the nuclear context, it’s our role to ensure that operators are able to do what is claimed of them within each of our safety cases.

Training, development and support for you:

During this programme, you’ll receive introductory classroom and on-the-job training and mentoring in the Human Factors aspects of Human-Machine Interface (HMI) design, Human Reliability Assessment (HRA) and operating procedures in the nuclear industry context.

You’ll be supported by the team whilst you learn about the discipline: what it is, how it’s applied and its role in supporting the safe and reliable running of our stations. For your first few assignments, you’ll work with Human Factors Specialists and as you begin to gain confidence and knowledge, you’ll support the wider new nuclear build programmes.

Head to our Careers website for more information about life at EDF.

Where you’ll work:

This placement will be based at our offices in Gloucester, with some travel to other sites.

What you’ll need to apply:

  • On track to achieve (or will have already achieved) a 2:1 undergraduate degree or 2:2 postgraduate qualification in a subject relevant to human factors, psychology or STEM.
  • Interest in human factors, human error and the ‘person/user’ side of engineering.
  • Willingness to learn and ask questions.
  • Proactive “can-do” attitude to resolving problems.

Our work placements are designed to help you identify your strengths and develop your skills within a real-world organisation, an experience which is invaluable for your future career.

We’re looking for people who are keen to learn more about our exciting industry and have a desire to develop skills such as communication, problem-solving, team-working and time-management, within a commercial environment.

What salary and benefits are we offering you?

  • Starting salary of £18,329
  • 25 days’ annual leave
  • Flexible benefits package
  • Wellbeing and support services
