Fuel Tooling Engineer

Fuel Tooling Engineer, Barnwood, Gloucester, £30,000 - £40,000

The Opportunity

#WeAreEDF and are leading the transition to a cleaner, low emission electric future, tackling climate change and helping Britain achieve net zero.

One of the key capabilities required to support the new nuclear build projects, operations and decommissioning is a thorough demonstrable and sustainable technical understanding of the plant, its systems and the associated safety case.  The skills and knowledge required to maintain this capability can be scarce, take a long time to develop, and are currently attributed to each Licensee individually.

In order to ensure this critical capability is maintained and developed a Technical Services Organisation (TSO) has been implemented. The TSO, in combination with the new Design Authorities of the Licensees, will form the Technical Client Organisation (TCO); a platform for collaboration driving a common approach and replication where appropriate. Longer term the vision is to create an organisation that will ultimately bring together all the required “Technical” support resources in EDF’s UK nuclear business units to enable EDF related duty holders to comply with all conditions inherent in the UK’s regulatory framework for nuclear safety, security and environmental protection.

We now have a fantastic opportunity for a Fuel Tooling Engineer to join the Mechanical Systems Branch of the Pressurized Water Reactor Technology (PWRT) function in the TCO, supporting projects on Hinkley Point C (HPC) and Sizewell C (SZC). You will have the chance to develop an in-depth knowledge of pressurised reactor design and operation, gaining invaluable competencies allowing for progression into other roles in the wider project.

The Role

As the Fuel Tooling Engineer, you will work as part of a team to help the PWRT fulfil its responsibility to have technical oversight of the design, procurement, manufacturing, construction and commissioning of the plant. You will liaise closely with the teams overseeing manufacturing and commissioning, and external designers and manufacturers based in the UK, France and Germany.

Specifically, your main accountabilities will be:

•    Acting as the Responsible Designer for Fuel Tooling equipment used for the handling and inspection of reactor fuel (probes, cameras, etc)
•    Providing technical support to ensure a safe, constructible and fit for purpose design is delivered
•    Managing the technical review and acceptance of design documentation
•    Ensure safety case requirements are captured in the design
•    Managing technical issues and providing solutions to enable delivery
•    Developing and maintaining effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including the ONR

The Skills

To be successful in this role you will demonstrate the following:

•    Degree or equivalent in a Mechanical Engineering Discipline, or HND qualification plus relevant experience
•    Knowledge of fuel handling, storage, and processes
•    Knowledge of the principles of safety case requirements and how these are implemented through the project lifecycle
•    Experience in writing and maintaining safety case documentation
•    Excellent communication and relationship- building skills

•    Understanding of nuclear power station design
•    Knowledge of PWR or EPR
