The Opportunity

Are you looking for a legal career which is rewarding and where you can really make a difference? Well we’re looking for a talented and self-starting Legal Counsel to come and join our Generation Legal team!

EDF is the industry leader in low carbon generation and has a strong vision to help Britain achieve Net Zero. The Generation business is the part of the business that manages EDF’s generation assets being nuclear power stations, a coal station and a gas storage facility and is in the process of decommissioning a coal power station. The Generation Legal Team supports the whole lifecycle of these assets (during operations and decommissioning) as well as commercial development activities which build opportunities for the future from our land, skilled workforce and collaboration with others across the industry. 

There is an opportunity to work in either the Nuclear or Thermal and Commercial Development part of the Generation Legal team and your work is critical to the success of the business with responsibilities which include: 

  • Projects: leading projects for the Generation business, including M&A activity,  corporate reorganisations and strategic development opportunities;
  • Property: negotiating and supporting the management of lease arrangements, licences and sale of freeholds to facilitate commercial development activities and operations; 
  • Construction: negotiating and supporting the management of contracts required for the construction of new facilities at our existing plant and the deconstruction of facilities on both our nuclear and thermal stations, including management of any disputes;
  • Commercial: supporting the business in its commercial contract negotiations for both operations and decommissioning to realise value and synergies across our supply chain;
  • Intellectual Property Rights: understanding, overseeing and advising on complex IPR rights across different technologies;
  • Organisational Governance: supporting the operation of the various group companies and providing company secretarial assistance to the Boards;
  • Compliance: supporting the business in understanding regulatory compliance obligations and demonstrating best practice in all aspects including GDPR, export controls, health & safety and environment, nuclear licensing.


Our teams are set up to work flexibly, therefore you don’t have to live in the South West of England. As long as you’re able to travel to the office 2/3 days a week to collaborate with your team and stakeholders, you can be based anywhere in the UK.

The Role and Skills

You’ll have a broad range of responsibilities but will have specialist experience in projects, commercial law and the energy sector will provide a distinct advantage. You’ll be confident collaborating with the complete range of seniority across the business and experienced in planning and managing complex legal matters simultaneously with responsive, succinct and pragmatic day-to-day advice. 

You’ll have a proactive, can-do approach and strong commercial acumen with the ability to identify risk, risk mitigations and present suitable options to the business balancing risk and reward. You’ll also have great attention to detail, providing highly pragmatic legal advice in the context of an established, commercial and operational business.
