External Affairs Manager - Scotland

The External Affairs Manager for Scotland will work under the line management of the Senior External Affairs Manager as part of the EDF Renewables External Affairs team to deliver the requirements of the company’s External Communication and Community Strategies.

EDF Renewables UK and Ireland has 37 wind farms and two battery storage units which are already operational – that’s almost 1 GW and we want to build four times that much. In Scotland over the next few years, we will see the NNG offshore wind farm and various other projects being built. With each of these we have important stakeholders we want to work in partnership with such as the media, politicians, interested groups and communities. It is very important that we can build a positive reputation in Scotland and that we are a partner that can be trusted. This is about more than sending out press releases and having meetings; it is about building meaningful and worthwhile relationships with people and organisations that make us the renewables company people want to work with in Scotland.

We need someone who can develop and manage a Scottish Communications Strategy while contributing to several other initiatives across the EDF Renewables UK development and operational portfolios which promote and safeguard the positive reputation of the company its investors and partners. You will need to both help build and maintain the relationships with local communities and stakeholders around our sites, or support the business leaders in doing so, while ensuring consistency of our approach in line with our External Communications and Community Strategies.

The Skills

You must have the following experience and skills:

•    Relevant experience in Scottish affairs and preferably in wind technology
•    Demonstrable experience in media, community, stakeholder and public affairs management
•    Ability to manage external agencies
•    Ability to manage external affairs issues proactively and reactively
•    Experience in establishing co-operative relationships with political representatives plus community, consumer, and public interest groups.
•    Full driving licence

The Person

You will be responsible for the following:

•    Increasing and managing the reputation of EDF Renewables in Scotland by working with national and local media, politicians, communities and other stakeholders such as Scottish Renewables.
•    Creating a Scottish Communications Strategy
•    Establishing relationships directly with journalists, politicians and communities operating in the vicinity of our developments.
•    Working directly with our community fund providers to ensure positive media coverage
•    Responding to requests for information from the media or designate another appropriate spokesperson or information source. 
•    Contributing content for the EDF Renewables website
•    Providing digital content for EDF Renewables UK and Ireland social media channels
•    Arranging appropriate public appearances, lectures, sponsorships or exhibits to increase project awareness and to promote goodwill (opening ceremonies, wind day, visits etc.)
•    Being accountable to the Senior External Affairs Manager to ensure visibility of the communications strategy and activity, and that communications issues are identified and dealt with effectively.
•    Working closely with the central corporate affairs and internal communications teams.
•    Working closely with the Scottish project development and delivery teams to support and advise them.
•    Arranging appropriate public appearances, lectures, sponsorships or exhibits to increase project awareness and to promote goodwill (opening ceremonies, wind day, visits etc.)
