Vacancy Overview

Responsible for ensuring that the finance systems are performing effectively, operating within the agreed parameters, optimised and developed in accordance with the business requirements. Interrogate the finance systems, develop key metrics, provide statistical insights and analysis to assist senior stakeholders make appropriate informed decisions.


This role sits alongside the business owners and assists with all decisions impacting gross margin, making a significant positive impact on performance and helping the business to deliver its strategic and financial gross margin targets. This role jointly owns the finance systems and will act as the interface between the business, Business Change & IT and external parties.


Contextual Information


-      The role sits within the Customers business which supplies gas and electricity to residential and business customers across the UK and provides wholesale market optimisation of EDF Energy’s generation and customer assets.

-      EDF Energy is the market leader in electricity supply to business customers with a c.20% market share and has c.11% (4th largest supplier) in the residential market.

-      The UK market for gas and electricity is widely considered to be the most competitive of EU energy markets. It is also a market subject to intense political, regulatory and media scrutiny and attention.

The P&L has ~£6.5bn revenue with 0.5% EBITDA

Nature and Scope

Principal Accountabilities

  1. Accountable for the delivery and operation of the Gross Margin calculation, Settlements models, Billing based revenue reporting (BBRR) reports. Work with the superusers to ensure that the calculation is ran in accordance with the business schedule, effectively and within time parameters identifying opportunities to accelerate and enhance the process. Constantly review, refine and improve the workflows including the reporting tool and outputs.
  2. Work in conjunction with the Senior Manager of Business Logic and Insight to improve existing processes, define, test and deploy new system functionality adding value but ensuring the calculation is not undermined or placed at risk. Ensure that system documentation is maintained, superusers are briefed and trained accordingly so they can play an active role in the development and deployment.
  3. Owns the complete set of analytics tools which includes the maintenance, development and creation of new innovative solutions in accordance with business and technological requirements. Create an analytics platform whereby finance users can interrogate, run queries and define their own reporting requirements. Acts as the Finance Subject Matter Expert on analytics and advises the FLT accordingly. Will maintain the relationships and act as the Intelligent Customer for EDF Energy Customers Finance.
  4. Responsible for the management of the end to end solution and the individuals which support the application. Regularly test the business logic, algorithms and key inputs to ensure the systems is operating within the agreed parameters. Act as the assignment manager to the superusers, ensure that their knowledge and development is maintained using them during development and testing phases (if appropriate and dependent on work volumes).
  5. Maintain, manage and develop a robust set of project controls and governance. Represent Customers Finance at the various internal and external forums, make decisions in accordance with DAL and other internal compliance matters ensuring correct documentation is submitted and maintained for audit purposes. Manages AWS cost control, proactively seeks optimization and cost reduction opportunities.
  6. Collaborate with Senior Stakeholders and maintain a ‘real time’ relationship with Finance Senior Managers within Gross Margin and Settlements. Collaborates with the EDFE analytics teams in Ops, Sales and Marketing, WMO and Bluelab. Engages with Customer Data Program and other parts of the organisation for data needs and supports the ongoing drive to become a data centric organisation.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience

Technical skills



  • Modelling of business logic from multiple data sources
  • Knowledge of analytics and visualisation tools such as Alteryx and Tableau
  • General database knowledge and SQL knowledge (intermediate)
  • Understanding of code management branching principles
  • AWS architecture and components knowledge. Understanding of RDS, Jenkins, Lambda, Redshift, EC2s, multi account concept, AIM roles, AMIs, CloudFormation (understand concept), Availability zones, entity security models, private virtual clouds, Cloudwatch (Intermediate - will aim to get practitioner certified in 6 months)


Work towards the following technical requirements;

  • Alteryx designer and server (advanced), including in-DB tools
  • Tableau desktop and server (advanced)
  • Able to install and optimize Alteryx and Tableau server
  • Understanding of the UK Energy industry

Desired or essential learn in the first 12 months

  • Windows Server (2012 and 2016), basic configuration
  • Understanding of MS SQL Express
  • Database knowledge: Redshift (and potentially Snowflake)
  • Basic database optimisation (indexing, distribution keys etc)
  • AWS DMS (data migration services) basic understanding
  • Basic Powershell scripting


Certification (to be obtained at EDF)

  • Alteryx ACE certification (obtain in <2 years)
  • Tableau master (obtain in <2 years)
  • AWS Cloud practitioner (obtain < 6 months)
