Flexibility Services Technical Manager

The purpose of this role is to be responsible and accountable for all technical aspects of developing, acquiring and implementing a pipeline of new demand side response and flexibility customers. The Flexibility Services Technical Manager will work closely with the Sales and Delivery teams, developing internal and external stakeholder relationships in support of these objectives.

Nature and Scope

Customers operate within a fast paced, continuously evolving environment giving rise to key challenges including responding to regulatory and market reforms through innovative products, services or processes, creating value in tight margin highly competitive market places, and building trust with customers. Employee mix includes directly sourced contact centre staff and increasingly outsourced capability both on and off shore.

The job holder is fully empowered to make Commercial decisions, in consultation with relevant stakeholders, and to make other decisions in accordance with the Customers FAL matrix. They will be expected to engage with senior stakeholders, escalating where necessary and presenting clear and concise information.

The Flexibility Services Technical Manager will play a leading role in the projects we deliver across a range of sectors from industrial, commercial property, public sector, higher education and retail. The role-holder reports to the Senior Manager of Customer Flexibility Development.

The Technical Manager will frequently meet and work with customers as part of our key account approach. It will be expected for the role-holder to provide advice on the technical aspects of DSR and flexibility to expert and non-expert end users and decision makers. It will be important to address topics of a technical nature without losing sight of strategic and commercial objectives. 

The Technical Manager will take the lead on technical and engineering projects, ranging from controls upgrades to metering and will be expected to carry out site visits to assess customer assets. The Technical Manager will be an essential member of our “deal teams” working with other teams (Energy Solutions, I&C Business Sales) to successfully win and deliver DSR/Flexibility projects (>£5million).

The role responsibilities will cover a wide range of topics involving analysis of current energy uses on a customer site and identifying opportunities for participation in a range of Flexibility schemes. Knowledge of electrical systems, controls, HVAC, lighting and Building Management Systems, UPS, back up generation is desirable. It is expected that the Technical Manager will process expert technical knowledge on one or more of these but knowledge of how they can contribute to load shifting is critical.

Principal Accountabilities

• Manage and own the technical delivery of a pipeline of DSR and Flexibility opportunities in line with EDF Energy’s growth targets including overseeing and conducting site audits and the production of energy DSR ready reports ensuring all health and safety regulations are followed

• Manage the relevant National Grid testing and verification process coordinating with the relevant technology partner as applicable

• Contribute to meeting assigned targets for profitable Flexibility sales volume

• Lead the technical response for Flexibility tender opportunities engaging with the Commercial teams and relevant SAM

• Lead the DSR flexibility value modelling for each prospect’s assets inputting into customer proposal for the SAMs

• Co-ordinate and Project Manage the involvement of personnel, including technology partner resources, third party suppliers customer resources, in order to meet project deadlines.

• Leads technical solution development that best address customer needs and aligns to EDF Energy’s strategy, while coordinating the involvement of all necessary company personnel.

• Establishes productive, professional relationships with key personnel SAMs and, account teams.

• Proactively assesses, clarifies and validates customer Flex opportunities on an ongoing basis.


Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience

A good engineering degree (preferably in electrical/mechanical engineering but could also be in chemical/process engineering) is required or a demonstration of ability to the same level delivered in a working environment

• Experience in the areas of flexibility and demand side response, process engineering and/or related fields with a track record of delivering successful technical projects through to completion

• Experience of working with large organisations in either the private or public sectors

• Working towards chartership or similar professional recognition

• First class interpersonal and communication skills to Board level

• Preferable industry experience in the electricity or utility sector

• A track record of applying technical and commercial skills in design of demand side management and energy efficiency solutions

 • Excellent stakeholder manager across the entire spectrum; ability to network and build

relationships at any level in any organisation and influence decision making

 • Analytical, highly numerate, results orientated and high degree of commercial awareness

• Highly motivated, self-starter
